General Information

To commemorate the 125th anniversary of Bodegas Carlos Serres, the wine that represented the winery's premium range, Onomástica, changed its name to highlight the exceptional vineyard of Carlos Serres, Finca El Estanque. Slightly more than 60 hectares of vineyard cultivated southeast of Haro with the traditional Rioja varieties in an old vineyard, where in the 1980s, the implementation of trellis cultivation was introduced, which was very innovative at the time.

From here comes the red wine we now propose from a newly emerging range in the winery that will make a great impression, Carlos Serres 1896 Finca El Estanque Reserva 2014. This is the flagship wine of the new, more exclusive line by Carlos Serres, a Reserva predominantly made with the tempranillo variety, complemented beautifully by graciano and mazuelo.

For its production, three privileged plots of Finca El Estanque were selected and vinified separately in concrete tanks. These plots are cultivated on poor soils, with yields below the average, granting exceptional quality to the grape clusters. The finest essence of Finca El Estanque, from the heart of the D.O.Ca. Rioja.

Tasting notes

It displays a beautiful black apricot color with a well-covered layer.

On the nose, it shows great complexity and elegance, with aromas of black fruits accompanied by mineral and spicy notes (vanilla), leading to hints of chocolate and toasted sensations.

With excellent balance on the palate, it is a flavorful, broad Reserva, with a meaty texture and good acidity. The finish is long, expressive, and persistent.

The winery

Bodegas Carlos Serres

The historic winery Carlos Serres is named after its founder, a renowned wine consultant born in Orleans, who was a pioneer in settling in Rioja after the arrival of phylloxera in France. Amazed by the winemaking conditions offered by Rioja, Carlos Serres founded his own winery in the Barrio de la Estación of Haro in 1896. From there, he became a precursor of wine aging following the Bordeaux model. He also stood out as a pioneer in the export of Rioja wine. In the year 2000, the Vivanco family acquired 100% of Bodegas Carlos Serres, leading to a significant renewal of the winery's wines and the construction of new facilities in the municipality of Haro, but outside the Barrio de la Estación.

The wines of Carlos Serres are made with grapes from the El Estanque estate, which spans 60 hectares and is located in Haro (La Rioja), as is the winery itself. The soils of the estate, clay-limestone with the presence of gravel, are ideal for cultivating traditional grape varieties. The winery is committed to using concrete tanks for winemaking, aiming to maximize the fruity expression of each variety (the porosity of concrete allows for micro-oxygenation).

In July 2020, Bodegas Carlos Serres achieved the Wineries for Climate Protection certification. This seal recognizes the commitment to sustainability and environmental care, currently held by only 27 wineries in Spain.
