Taté 2021 is a red wine crafted from a carefully balanced blend of the varieties garnacha tintorera, mencía, merenzao, grao, and brancellao, selected from different plots with heterogeneous composition, at an altitude of 550-600 meters. Old vines with good sun exposure gave rise to a vibrant red wine from Bodegas Viña Somoza (D.O. Valdeorras) that stands out for its mineral character, aromatic complexity, and fresh, direct palate.

General Information

Taté 2021 is a red wine produced by Bodegas Viña Somoza from vines aged between 85 and 115 years, located in front of the Santuario de As Ermitas, in the Cocello de O Bolo (Ourense), in a gorge of the Alto Bibei.

After a meticulous manual selection of the best grapes from different plots and soils (ranging from clay with black slate to sand and gneiss, as well as granite and alluvial soils), located at an altitude of 550-600 meters, Bodegas Viña Somoza processed the fruit on the same day of harvest. Fermentation began with spontaneous yeasts at controlled temperatures, with long macerations of the grapes in cold conditions, partially destemmed and partially with whole clusters, followed by pressing and transfer to barrels. The production of Taté 2021 concluded with a 12-month aging in French oak barrels of 400 and 500 liters, resulting in an Atlantic-profile red wine with balsamic notes and mineral echoes, characterized by its intense aromas of wild berries and rose-like notes, its liveliness, and its balanced, direct, and fresh palate.

Bodegas Viña Somoza is one of the most important wineries in the D.O. Valdeorras. Founded in A Rúa in 2000 by Víctor Fernández, its philosophy is based on the recovery of old vineyards of native varieties, from which unique wines are born, carrying all the essence and authenticity of Galicia, such as this Taté 2021 brought to you by the Club. Pair it with cured meats, fatty fish, white meats, and pickles.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Viña Somoza is a small winery established in 2000 in the town of A Rúa de Valdeorras (Orense). Its founder, Víctor Fernández, revived the area's native vineyards and, with these resources and a winemaking approach based on the fusion of tradition and modernity, set out to craft unique wines that keep the Galician essence alive.

The winery, which in 2015 became the property of a sole owner, boasts 15 hectares of vineyards spread across the estates of Redondo, Pedrazais, and Veguiña. The vines, aged between 30 and 60 years, grow on hillside soils composed of slate and granitic sands, nourished by the Sil River. This rich terroir, combined with the microclimate they enjoy, produces excellent raw materials that result in some of the best godellos in Spain.

Bodegas Viña Somoza also exports its wines beyond Spain to countries such as the United States, Canada, Mexico, England, and Germany.
