A signature wine that’s been blessed with high scores from international critics from the outset. This vintage, Selectus 2017 (92 points from James Suckling) is a blend of Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. It brings out the full expression of these grapes, which grew on a spectacular estate owned by the Lorenzo family in Chinchilla de Montearagón (Albacete) located at an altitude of 1000 metres. And it’s been aged for 18 months in new French oak barrels. Potent, with smooth, ripe tannins, very few bottles are produced of this wine and only in the best years.

General Information

Selectus 2017 combines four international varieties: Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot. The result is an elegant blend with a cutting-edge style that brings out the full expression of the typical characteristics of all four varieties. Each one is vinified separately. The free-run musts were transferred to new French oak barrels where they underwent malolactic fermentation and ageing (for 18 months). The wines were then blended in 10,000-litre French oak vats.

The result is a modern-style, potent and highly expressive red that’s produced in limited quantities and only from the best vintages. Its groundbreaking label was created by designer Óscar Mariné.

Acquired by the Lorenzo family at the end of the last century, Finca Los Aljibe has been one of the leading firms based in Castilla-La Mancha since its beginnings. This outstanding 900-hectare estate located in the municipality of Chinchilla de Montearagón (Albacete) is planted with nearly 180 hectares of vineyards of different varieties in lime soils that are poor in organic matter. This place, which lies at an altitude of 1000 metres, is ideally suited to cultivating the vines from which Bodega Los Aljibes produces its wines.

One of the main attractions of Los Aljibes is the culturally valuable architectural complex that stands on the estate, with the traditional characteristics of La Mancha. It houses modern, functional facilities that produce signature wines. Selectus is the firm’s top wine and one of the most notable of those produced in the region since its establishment.

Selectus 2017 (V.T. Castilla) is ideal with hearty meat dishes such as fillet of pork in a reduction of red wine or beef hotpot.

Creators' opinion

Deep black cherry colour. Malolactic fermentation and ageing in new French oak barrels lend Selectus a unique nose with complex balsamic, mineral, and milky coffee aromas. Lots of body and structure on the palate, with smooth, ripe tannins.

The winery

Bodega Los Aljibes

Bodegas Los Aljibes is an ambitious family project located in Chinchilla de Montearagón (Albacete), a place that, at first glance, seems quite unusual to host a company of this kind. The winery was built in 2003 in the center of a spectacular estate that spans 178 hectares of vineyard—along with almond and olive trees—at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level. The list of grape varieties cultivated by the Lorenzo family there is impressive and, to say the least, unique: tempranillo, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, garnacha tintorera, petit verdot, syrah, chardonnay, verdejo, and sauvignon blanc. The limestone soils, continental climate, and altitude are factors that promote low yields and optimal ripening, enhancing the quality of the wines.

The winery's exterior replicates a typical Manchegan construction, while its interior houses the most cutting-edge technology. Here, high-expression wines with an excellent quality-to-price ratio are crafted. The wines of Finca Los Aljibes bear the seal of Vino de la Tierra de Castilla. Manuel Lorenzo, the founder's son, is the current General Director. Finca Los Aljibes takes its name from two natural underground water cisterns used to irrigate the vineyard. Another unique feature of the property is its stud farm of Purebred Spanish Horses (in fact, wine tourists can tour the estate in a horse-drawn carriage).
