The family-run Pago de los Capellanes winery has become a leading name not only in Ribera del Duero, but also on the Spanish wine scene in general. Pago de los Capellanes Crianza 2022 is the result of a vintage marked by a very hot summer and a lack of rain. Harvesting took place a few days earlier than usual, with extraordinary results in terms of grape quality and health.
The wine was grown on a selection of Tempranillo plots located in Pedrosa de Duero, La Horra and Gumiel del Mercado (Burgos), with an average age of 35 years. The vines are planted in infertile stony, clay-lime soils with low yields.
Cold pre-fermentative maceration for three days at below 12ºC. Addition of selected native yeasts. Fermentation in stainless steel tanks at a controlled temperature, with pumping over and phenolic control of the must undergoing maceration. Spontaneous malolactic fermentation at a low temperature and periodic stirring of the lees in tanks. Finally, it was aged for 12 months in 300-litre French oak barrels.
Used to receiving high scores from wine guides and critical acclaim, Pago de los Capellanes’s wines have a legion of followers who refuse to settle for any other Ribera del Duero label.
Founded in 1996 by Paco Rodero and his wife Concha Villa, the firm is now in the hands of their daughter Estefanía. The origin of the winery's name (meaning ‘chaplains’ estate’) dates back to the 15th century, when the chaplains of Pedrosa del Duero managed to acquire several vineyards, forming an estate. Following the nationwide confiscation and sale of church assets in the nineteenth century, these properties ceased to be ecclesiastical and passed into private hands. The Rodero family managed to buy back the estate and founded a winery that has earned great prestige.
Their philosophy is to respect the expression of the terroir as much as possible, using a minimally interventionist winemaking process. They make around 100,000 bottles a year and own some 200 hectares of vineyards between Pedrosa, Gumiel de Mercado, Mambrilla de Castrejón and La Horra, exclusively of the Tinto Fino (Tempranillo) variety.
Pago de los Capellanes Crianza 2022 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with rice dishes with meat, pasta and stewed lentils.
Intense cherry-red colour with a ruby rim and bluish hues. Clean and intense aromas of ripe red (cassis and redcurrant) and black (blackberry and plum) fruits in the nose. Hints of blue flowers (violets) appear, with nicely blended spicy background notes (vanilla, clove, coconut) from ageing in French oak. The distinctive notes of black liquorice are characteristic of the grape variety. Balanced structure on the attack and a texture that’s potent yet silky. Fresh, harmonious, vibrant. Lively tannins make it pleasant to drink. Long finish, full of aromas and sensations.
Pago de los Capellanes is a family-owned winery located in the heart of the D.O. Ribera del Duero. A small vineyard of the native tempranillo variety was the beginning of a dream that the restless minds of Paco Rodero and Conchita Villa turned into reality by founding the winery in 1996 in a unique setting among vineyards and century-old walnut trees. Paco, along with his father Doroteo, cared for this family vineyard, a plot that once belonged to the chaplains of the village.
The love for the land is the driving force behind a constantly evolving project. Their different vineyards on diverse soils, along with the climate and conditions of this privileged wine-growing area, allow them to create artisanal wines based on the deepest respect for the land and traditional viticulture. Pago de los Capellanes strives for the maximum expressiveness of the fruit, intensity of flavor, and enveloping smoothness. Each of their award-winning wines is a reflection of their terroir.
In the mid-1990s, the couple formed by Paco Rodero and Conchita Villa, owners of several hectares of vineyards near Pedrosa de Duero, decided to build a winery to vinify the fruit of their vines. This is how Pago de los Capellanes was born, a benchmark for Ribera del Duero and Spanish wine, now celebrating 27 years of history.
The founders' daughter, Estefanía Rodero, joined the family business in 2015, and today she represents the new generation leading the winery after the passing of Paco Rodero in 2023.
