Olarra Clásico Gran Reserva 2018 is one of those wines that make the name of Rioja great, a blend dominated by Tempranillo that pays homage to the origins of Bodegas Olarra, reviving winemaking techniques from the golden age of Rioja wines.
Bodegas Olarra was founded by Luis Olarra in 1973 on the outskirts of Logroño. It is contemporaneous with Vinoselección and, like us, this winery has experienced the golden age of Rioja. Today, it is an essential name in this denomination of origin, exemplifying its most traditional style, a reliable and trustworthy choice that never fails.
Olarra Clásico Gran Reserva 2018 has been crafted following the traditional production method of the 1970s in Rioja. It is a red wine sourced from old vines planted in poor, low-yielding soils. The initial ageing took place in new oak barrels from Missouri and central France, followed by a subsequent ageing during the second year in old barrels, designed to highlight the primary and fermentation aromas over those of the ageing process itself. After 25 months, it was bottled without prior tartaric stabilization to preserve the wine’s structure and richness.
Olarra Clásico Gran Reserva 2018 displays a beautiful ruby‑garnet red colour, medium depth, vivid and bright.
Nose
On the nose, it presents as elegant with gentle reductive notes in its initial phase. Later, the first hints of spicy echoes and toasted, smoky wood emerge, continuing with aromatic notes of balsamic (licorice and undergrowth) to close with hints of cherry in liqueur and a finish of roasted cacao.
Mouth
On the palate, it is elegant and round, with a gentle entry and an excellent acidity that provides liveliness and expression. Good final persistence, marked by spicy and smoky notes.
Founded in 1973 in Logroño, Bodegas Olarra exemplifies the most traditional style of Rioja. It is a major winery on the national wine scene, always a safe and reliable choice. This winery, acting as one of the driving forces behind Rioja wine, stands out for the significant qualitative leap it has made in recent years, blending the most modern winemaking techniques with the traditional methods of production and aging in Rioja, creating wines conceived according to strict quality standards.
Thus, Bodegas Olarra cultivates high-quality raw materials, sourced both from its own vineyards and through agreements with the best winegrowers in Rioja: approximately 1,300 hectares of vineyards. It also boasts extensive experience working with oak barrels to ensure its wines reach their fullest expression. Additionally, Olarra is distinguished by the beauty and complexity of its facilities, known as the cathedral of Rioja, unique for their Y-shaped layout and 111 hexagonal domes.
In recent years, Olarra has become one of the most highly regarded wineries in the D.O.Ca. Rioja, and its wines are among the most awarded, such as Añares Reserva and Cerro Añón Crianza. It was named Best Spanish Winery at the prestigious International Wine and Spirit Competition (IWSC) held in London in 2013 and at the Berliner Wein Trophy in 2015.
