General Information

Founded in 1988 in the D.O. Ribera del Duero, Matarromera was an instant success and is now an icon of quality and one of the most important wine groups (Bodegas Familiares Matarromera) on the Spanish scene. Melior 3 2022 is a highly original wine made from Tempranillo grapes from 3 different areas: Ribera del Duero, Cigales and Toro. The three different wines were each made separately at one of the group’s wineries.

The Tempranillo grapes from Ribera del Duero were grown on the Finca Valdebaniego estate, in the coveted area of Valbuena de Duero, and provides rich aromas of black and red fruit with a lively tannic structure. In Cigales, the winery selected the Pago de las Costanas estate, which produces unique Tempranillo grapes with abundant fruity and minerally aromas. Tinta de Toro grapes from the Pago de la Calera estate in the D.O. Toro complete the blend, lending it freshness in the nose with balsamic hints and a pleasant structure of ripe tannins.

Following vinification, each wine was barrel aged for 12 months in a different winery (Emina, Valdelosfrailes and Cyan respectively) and transferred to Matarromera’s facilities for the final blend. The resulting Melior 3 2022 is a highly original wine that’s a brilliant combination of Tempranillos.

Bodegas Matarromera was established in 1988 in Valbuena de Duero, the most coveted part of Ribera del Duero. Its facilities are located on the slopes of a south-facing hill and are equipped with semi-underground cellars. Matarromera's first vintage won the Grand Gold Medal at the International Wine Competition, a great achievement for a winery that currently stands out on the Spanish wine scene. Its Melior range features young wines with a classical style.

The winery

Bodega Matarromera

Following the winemaking tradition of his Castilian ancestors, Carlos Moro founded the Matarromera winery in Valbuena de Duero (Valladolid) in 1988 with a clear objective: to create quality wines using the most advanced technology while respecting traditional winemaking methods. The main challenge undertaken by Carlos Moro was his commitment to new barrels for aging his wines, an initiative that was novel at the time in Ribera del Duero. Another key to Matarromera's success is its excellent vineyards, located in a legendary area of the D.O. Ribera del Duero: Valbuena de Duero.

Matarromera was the first winery of Carlos Moro and the seed of one of the most important wine groups in this country: Bodegas Familiares Matarromera. The first red wine produced by the winery—an ancestor of the brand we now know as Melior—achieved the title of "Best Wine in the World" at the International Organisation of Vine and Wine (OIV) competition held in Turkey in 1995. Currently, Bodega Matarromera has 150 hectares of its own vineyards and controls an additional 160 hectares.
