General Information

Marqués de Griñón Caliza Selección Especial 2021 is crafted at the estate that houses the D.O. Dominio de Valdepusa, a 50-hectare vineyard. The name "Caliza" pays tribute to the bedrock that characterizes this unique terroir, where a surface layer of clay gives way to a limestone subsoil, similar to the great vineyards of Burgundy.

Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñón reflects the visionary spirit of Carlos Falcó, a key figure in the transformation of Spanish viticulture. In the Montes de Toledo, he was a pioneer in promoting quality viticulture, introducing innovative practices and international varieties in a region previously underexplored. He was the first to plant cabernet sauvignon in Castilla-La Mancha and, in 1991, introduced the first syrah and petit verdot vines to Spain. Furthermore, he dared to cultivate graciano outside its traditional area in Rioja, paving the way for new expressions of this variety.

The harvest of Marqués de Griñón Caliza Selección Especial 2021 was carried out manually, followed by destemming and gravity-fed transfer into fermentation tanks. After an extended maceration of up to four weeks, the wine was aged for 10 months in semi-new French oak barrels, in a temperature-controlled aging cellar. It was bottled without fining or filtering, thus preserving its full authenticity.

Marqués de Griñón Caliza Selección Especial 2021 is ideal to pair with roasted lamb shank or braised ossobuco with mushrooms.

The winery

Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñón

The Marqués de Griñón and Castelmoncayo, Carlos Falcó, was one of the key figures in the modernization of Spanish winemaking in recent decades. He introduced cabernet sauvignon, merlot, syrah, chardonnay, and petit verdot varieties to Spain; was the first to implement mixed vine planting models (Canopy management, or foliage management), drip irrigation, and Smart-Dyson trellises; and paved the way for the development of competitive wines in the international market.

Located in Malpica de Tajo, Toledo, Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñón is a family winery with a strong historical tradition and long-term future prospects. Since 1292, the estate has been in the hands of the Falcó family, a lineage that has passed down values of sustainability and respect for the environment, culture, and tradition from generation to generation. Pagos de Familia Marqués de Griñón was a pioneering firm in applying cutting-edge viticulture in our country, producing wines with foreign varieties in the Montes de Toledo and always striving for excellence from the vineyard to the glass.
