Lafou de Batea 2017 is one of the interesting signature wines produced by Lafou Celler, a winery belonging to the Roqueta family, a prominent Catalan winemaking lineage. The Tarragona-based winery is well-known for its mastery of Garnacha, the queen grape variety of the D.O. Terra Alta. Specifically, the red and hairy Garnacha varieties, with a touch of Cariñena, share the spotlight in this red wine, originating from vineyards aged between 50 and 70 years from the Finca Mas Gabrielet in Batea.
To craft Lafou de Batea, Lafou Celler carried out manual harvesting of the grapes, which, upon arrival at the winery, were quickly cooled in a refrigeration chamber before destemming. Fermentation in small open stainless steel tanks, parcel-based vinification, and a patient aging process of 12 months in oak barrels and concrete eggs resulted in a red wine with great aromatic complexity, freshness, a long finish, and the potential for extended bottle aging.
Named Winemaker of the Year in 2016 by the Catalan Association of Sommeliers, Ramón Roqueta Segalés is the figure leading Lafou Celler, his most personal project and one of the four wineries of the Roqueta Origen family group, which he also heads. Founded in 2007 in the municipality of Batea (Tarragona), the winery is equipped with cutting-edge technology, and its wines, protected under the D.O. Terra Alta, are a true reflection of this region.
Deep cherry red color.
In the olfactory phase, it presents a wide range of aromatic sensations. Initially, nuances of red fruit, raw hazelnut, dried tomato, and balsamic memories of undergrowth appear, later evolving into notes of plum and black olive.
The complexity in the olfactory phase is echoed on the palate, with a fresh entry that evokes fruit, a certain acidity that balances the sweetness of Garnacha, and a prolonged finish highlighting hints of cocoa and wet stone.
Lafou Celler (2007) is the personal project of Ramón Roqueta Segalés, heir to a lineage connected to the wine world for over ten generations and founder in 1898 of Bodegas Ramón Roqueta, one of the most authentic and long-standing wineries in Catalonia.
Lafou Celler is located in the main square of the municipality of Batea (Tarragona), in a restored old manor house, and is equipped with the most advanced technology. Its wines, protected under the D.O. Terra Alta, are a true reflection of this region.
