La Bota de Palo Cortado Nº 86 “Bota NO” is a unique palo cortado, selected by Equipo Navazos from the casks of Pérez Barquero, the most “sherry-like” producer in the Montilla-Moriles region, known for the finesse and precision of their wines. The quality of vineyard work is essential to eliminate the excessive richness of the pedro ximénez grape with a touch of extra ripeness. This is the case with La Bota de Palo Cortado Nº 86 “Bota NO” (3/8), where the unexpected occurs: an oxidative wine that displays verticality, lightness, and delicacy, which are not typical characteristics of a robust oloroso from Córdoba.

The elegance characterized by La Bota de Palo Cortado Nº 86 “Bota NO” shows that sometimes the improbable happens. Thanks to the splendid work in the vineyard with vines located in the Altos de Moriles, it is possible to achieve an oxidative wine that stands out for its lightness, finesse, and delicacy, something unique in an oloroso from Córdoba.
Equipo Navazos is formed by a group of people, mostly great lovers of Andalusian fortified wines, represented by Eduardo Ojeda and Jesús Barquín, whose goal is to uncover hidden treasures in the wineries of the Jerez and Montilla-Moriles regions. Since 2005, they have been selecting soleras and casks to bottle these wines artisanally and in very limited series—such as La Bota de Palo Cortado 86 “Bota NO”—in collaboration with some of the best Andalusian wineries, such as, in this case, Pérez Barquero.
This exceptional wine, of which only 1300 bottles exist, comes from the October 2018 saca, from a single cask selected from the small solera containing this wine. Without being very old, with an average estimated age of 30 years, the final result is prodigious. With a rating of 95 Parker points, it is an ideal wine to accompany all kinds of appetizers, cured meats, Iberian ham, roast lamb, aged cheeses, candied fruit, and some chocolate.
Dark chestnut color, almost mahogany, with golden touches, clean and bright.
On the nose, aromas of very good intensity and high quality appear, with notes of dried fruits, sweet spices, toasted and roasted hints, along with balsamic and saline touches. The richness in nuances stands out.
Highly aromatic, the palate is powerful and deep, yet smooth and elegant. Many of the notes from the nose reappear in a long and very persistent finish.
The Equipo Navazos project was born to bring joy to those passionate about traditional Andalusian wines, which are among the great wines of the world. It originates from the shared passion of a large number of lovers and connoisseurs of Andalusian fortified wines, those gems hidden in the cellars of Jerez, Sanlúcar, El Puerto, Montilla, or their surroundings, which they feel the need to recover.
In 2005, Equipo Navazos began selecting some of these wine casks based on their own parameters and characteristics, seeking special complexity and finesse. Once the cask was chosen, they bottled these wines in very limited series for a group of enthusiasts of these wines from Spain, Germany, the United Kingdom, and the United States.
Their philosophy is to bottle small batches of wines with unique characteristics acquired from the cellars of Jerez and Montilla-Moriles under the designation "La Bota de …". They imitate a model used by independent whisky distributors. What makes them different is that they select very limited series of a product that has nothing to do with trends, guided by their tastes and principles, but which ultimately succeeds. An example of this was when they began in 2005. The Sánchez Ayala cellar had 64 unsold casks of an amontillado wine that had been aging since 1986. Eduardo Ojeda and Jesús Barquín (the leading figures of Equipo Navazos), along with a few dozen friends, acquired one of those 64 casks, which amounted to more than 600 bottles of that wine.
Since 2007, a small quantity of bottles from each edition has started to be released for the general public. Among these, we find gems such as La Bota de Amontillado "Navazos", La Bota de Fino "Macharnudo Alto", La Bota de Palo Cortado "Bota Punta", La Bota de Manzanilla…
The snowball has continued to grow, and the number of bottles in circulation has increased, but within artisanal limits. Only a few thousand bottles at most; sometimes just a few hundred. Equipo Navazos has become increasingly involved in earlier stages, collaborating with winegrowers during the production phase, even in the vineyard itself, and has even partnered with some of them to produce specific wines or brandies.
