Ignios Orígenes Vijariego 2018 is perhaps the best wine by Borja Pérez at the Ignios Orígenes winery. We are talking about a sensational red wine, a gem from the Canary Islands, made entirely with vijariego negro just a few kilometers from Teide. It stands out for its aromatic characteristics, its limited production, and its extremely high quality. Unique in its kind.

Ignios Orígenes Vijariego 2018 is a unique red wine made 100% from the best selection of vijariego negro grapes from a vineyard located in Icod de los Vinos, cultivated on sandy-loam volcanic soils at over 750 meters above sea level, with a northern orientation. With a yield of 1000 kg per hectare and limited cultivable surface, the result is a very limited production of less than 3000 bottles. A quality that makes it unique.
Ignios Orígenes was born in 2011 with the young winemaker Borja Pérez, in the northern part of the island of Tenerife. Together with a family of winemaking tradition, this personal project seeks to produce great wines with characteristics as unique as the area they come from: volcanic soils, an Atlantic climate influenced by trade winds, and unique grape varieties such as the white marmajuelo and the red listán negro, baboso negro, or vijariego. Borja Pérez crafts his wines with native varieties, always respecting the fruit, planted in soils composed of ash and rocks in an Atlantic climate where those very Atlantic trade winds appear.
This exceptional red wine from Ignios Orígenes is part of the D.O. Icoden Daute Isora. Organically cultivated, Ignios Orígenes Vijariego 2018 is made through fermentation in concrete tanks with destemmed fruit and a maceration lasting 18 days with minimal intervention. After maceration, it is pressed and transferred to a used foudre and a 228-liter French oak barrel for malolactic fermentation and subsequent aging for 12 months. The result is a deep, unique wine with earthy notes from the fresh volcanic soil and a clean acidity, ideal for pairing with cured meats, white meats with sauces, roasted lamb, and stews.
Ruby red color, medium layer, clean and bright.
On the nose, it is fragrant and fruity, with predominant stewed red fruit and earthy notes that reveal its volcanic origin.
On the palate, it is very deep, clean, with a more vertical character. Lots of freshness and acidity. It has a long aftertaste.
Artífice originates with the aim of paying tribute to all the people from the countryside who have made agriculture their way of life, while preserving, in some way, the winemaking tradition of the Canary Islands.
Although the Pérez family has been working in the wine trade for many years, it was in 2011 when the young Borja Pérez took the lead on this project in Ycoden Daute Isora. He transitioned from being a race car mechanic and fire truck driver to leading his own winemaking project called Ignios Orígenes.
For Borja Pérez, Ignios Orígenes had to be based on the unique characteristics of the area they are in: volcanic soils, an Atlantic climate influenced by trade winds, and unique grape varieties such as the white marmajuelo and the red listán negro, baboso negro, or vijariego.
After gaining recognition with the Ignios project, the winemaker from Tenerife created different wines under the Artífice brand. With this project, he preserves old vineyards from small local growers with low production, from whom he buys the grapes. In these vineyards, a reasonable viticulture is practiced, with good advisory work for the growers and minimal intervention in the winemaking process. The aim is to craft authentic wines, enhancing native varieties and always respecting the fruit.
In his winemaking approach, Borja Pérez does not reject technological innovations; he simply emphasizes that they should be used when necessary, but never to alter the wine's style. Pérez oversees all processes of winemaking, from working in the field to the sale of the final product.
