General Information

Ignios Orígenes Baboso Negro 2022 is a single-varietal wine made from the best selection of baboso negro grapes from the La Vizcondesa estate, a vineyard cultivated on sandy-loam soils at over 450 meters above sea level. This red wine faithfully represents the varietal characteristics and, above all, the volcanic soil from which it originates. The result is extraordinary: a red wine with exceptional complexity and finesse that, according to the winery, will benefit from decanting for several minutes to maximize the sensory experience and fully enjoy its aromas.

The project Ignios Orígenes was born with young winemaker Borja Pérez in 2011, in the northern area of the island of Tenerife, under singular pillars as unique as the area itself: volcanic soils, an Atlantic climate influenced by trade winds, and unique grape varieties such as the white marmajuelo and the red listán negro, baboso negro, or vijariego. Borja Pérez works with native varieties, always respecting the fruit, planted on soils composed of ash and rocks in an Atlantic climate where the trade winds are present.

Ignios Orígenes Baboso Negro 2022 stands out for its vinification in concrete, with minimal intervention, over 16 days. After a gentle pressing, it was transferred to a new 15 hl foudre. Finally, it aged in French oak barrels for 13 months. The result is a red wine from the D.O. Icoden Daute Isora, perfect to pair with truffle dishes, smoked foods, steak tartare, and meat-based rice dishes.

Tasting notes

Medium-layer cherry red color, clean and bright.

On the nose, it clearly shows all the character of the variety and the terroir, with aromas of ripe red fruit, floral notes, and a marked minerality.

On the palate, it is agile, fresh, sweet, direct, with good citrus acidity and very long.

The winery

Artífice originates with the aim of paying tribute to all the people from the countryside who have made agriculture their way of life, while preserving, in some way, the winemaking tradition of the Canary Islands.

Although the Pérez family has been working in the wine trade for many years, it was in 2011 when the young Borja Pérez took the lead on this project in Ycoden Daute Isora. He transitioned from being a race car mechanic and fire truck driver to leading his own winemaking project called Ignios Orígenes.

For Borja Pérez, Ignios Orígenes had to be based on the unique characteristics of the area they are in: volcanic soils, an Atlantic climate influenced by trade winds, and unique grape varieties such as the white marmajuelo and the red listán negro, baboso negro, or vijariego.

After gaining recognition with the Ignios project, the winemaker from Tenerife created different wines under the Artífice brand. With this project, he preserves old vineyards from small local growers with low production, from whom he buys the grapes. In these vineyards, a reasonable viticulture is practiced, with good advisory work for the growers and minimal intervention in the winemaking process. The aim is to craft authentic wines, enhancing native varieties and always respecting the fruit.

In his winemaking approach, Borja Pérez does not reject technological innovations; he simply emphasizes that they should be used when necessary, but never to alter the wine's style. Pérez oversees all processes of winemaking, from working in the field to the sale of the final product.
