General Information

Frank Gehry Selection 2012 is the second vintage of one of the greatest wines not only from Herederos Marqués de Riscal but also from Rioja. Created to pay tribute to the renowned Canadian architect Frank Gehry, the mastermind behind the impressive design of the Marqués de Riscal Hotel, a true symbol of the City of Wine of this centenary firm, this is an exceptional Gran Reserva red wine, the result of a meticulous selection of grapes from Elciego's own vineyards, over 80 years old.

Once the harvest was selected, grape by grape, on the manual selection tables of Herederos del Marqués de Riscal, an absolutely artisanal and unique winemaking process began. This included alcoholic fermentation at controlled temperature for five days, followed by a nine-day maceration, a total of 14 days of vatting, and aging for 30 months in French oak barrels from the best cooperages.

Frank Gehry Selection 2012 is a wine from the D.O.Ca. Rioja, broad, complex, and spicy, standing out for its structure, the great presence of very ripe fruit, and powerful yet velvety tannins. Its exceptional quality has earned it excellent reviews and high ratings, such as 92 and 94 points awarded respectively by Robert Parker and the specialized publication Wine Spectator. It is ideal for pairing with ham, mildly cured cheeses, stewed or cooked legumes, poultry, grilled meats, and roasts.

Tasting notes

Of an impressive intense cherry red color, almost opaque.

Aromatically elegant, deep, and with a multitude of nuances. A mature and fresh nose dominated by soft notes of vanilla over a bed of candied red fruits.

On the palate, it is elegant, fine, and delicate. Spectacular texture from start to finish. It stands out for its tension, amplitude, balance, freshness, and length. Present yet velvety tannins.

The winery

Herederos del Marqués de Riscal

Founded in 1858 in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa), Herederos del Marqués de Riscal is the oldest winery in Rioja alongside Marqués de Murrieta. In 1862, it marketed its first bottled wines, quickly garnering awards and recognition. Since then, it has maintained a prestigious trajectory, becoming one of the Spanish wineries with the greatest international projection (its wines are present in more than 100 countries). In 1972, it expanded its scope to the D.O. Rueda, producing its first white wines there. The year 2006 marked another milestone for Marqués de Riscal with the inauguration of the City of Wine in Elciego: a spectacular complex surrounding the old family winery, designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, featuring a hotel, fine dining restaurants, and a Vinotherapy center.

The World’s Best Vineyards 2020 list ranked Marqués de Riscal as the sixth-best wine tourism destination in the world.

In the D.O.Ca. Rioja, Herederos del Marqués de Riscal owns 540 hectares of its own vineyards and manages another 900 hectares from suppliers; all within the Rioja Alavesa subzone, spread across Elciego and neighboring villages such as Leza, Laguardia, or Villabuena, and cultivated with the grape varieties tempranillo, graciano, mazuelo, and cabernet sauvignon. On the other hand, in the D.O. Rueda, it owns 330 hectares of vineyards planted with verdejo and sauvignon blanc grapes, and oversees 500 hectares of managed vineyards. In 2018, 100% of the estate's vineyards were certified for organic farming. Marqués de Riscal also produces wines under the Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León designation.
