Enclave Monastrell 2017 comes from ungrafted vines – unaffected by the phylloxera plague that devastated European vines many years ago – that are highly treasured today. In this case they’re 80-year-old Monastrell vines located on the Finca La Rambla estate. The grapes were harvested by hand and alcoholic fermentation and ageing – for 12 months – took place in large, 400-litre teardrop-shaped French oak barrels called perles.
Los Aljibes is an ambitious family-run winery based in Chinchilla de Montearagón (Albacete) – a somewhat odd place for an undertaking of this kind. The winery was built in 2003 in the centre of a spectacular estate with 178 hectares of vineyards – as well as almond and olive trees – at an altitude of nearly 1,000 metres.
The list of varieties the Lorenzo family cultivates there is impressive and unusual to say the least: Tempranillo, Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc, Garnacha Tintorera, Petit Verdot, Syrah, Chardonnay, Verdejo and Sauvignon Blanc. The limestone soils, the continental climate and the altitude are conducive to low yields and optimal ripening, producing quality wines. The family has also acquired Finca La Rambla, a marvellous estate located 10 km from the winery, where they work with old, ungrafted Monastrell vines that are a real treasure
On the outside the winery resembles a typical construction of La Manchega, while inside it’s equipped with cutting-edge technology. It produces high-expression wines that are excellent value for money. The wines grown on Los Aljibes display the Vino de la Tierra de Castilla label. Manuel Lorenzo, the son of the winery’s founder, is currently the general manager. Finca Los Aljibes is named after the two underground reservoirs – aljibes in Spanish – used to irrigate the vineyard. Another of the particular characteristics of the property is that it owns a stud farm for purebred Spanish horses.
The red Enclave Monastrell 2017 is ideal with roasts, all kinds of meats and game dishes.
Bodegas Los Aljibes is an ambitious family project located in Chinchilla de Montearagón (Albacete), a place that, at first glance, seems quite unusual to host a company of this kind. The winery was built in 2003 in the center of a spectacular estate that spans 178 hectares of vineyard—along with almond and olive trees—at nearly 1,000 meters above sea level. The list of grape varieties cultivated by the Lorenzo family there is impressive and, to say the least, unique: tempranillo, merlot, cabernet sauvignon, cabernet franc, garnacha tintorera, petit verdot, syrah, chardonnay, verdejo, and sauvignon blanc. The limestone soils, continental climate, and altitude are factors that promote low yields and optimal ripening, enhancing the quality of the wines.
The winery's exterior replicates a typical Manchegan construction, while its interior houses the most cutting-edge technology. Here, high-expression wines with an excellent quality-to-price ratio are crafted. The wines of Finca Los Aljibes bear the seal of Vino de la Tierra de Castilla. Manuel Lorenzo, the founder's son, is the current General Director. Finca Los Aljibes takes its name from two natural underground water cisterns used to irrigate the vineyard. Another unique feature of the property is its stud farm of Purebred Spanish Horses (in fact, wine tourists can tour the estate in a horse-drawn carriage).
