Jumilla is an example of a region that rapidly went from producing wines in bulk to becoming one of the best winemaking areas. Casa Castillo played a key role in this major qualitative leap that began in the 1990s and continues to this day to be one of the leaders in a Denominación de Origin that’s still growing in terms of quality. Casa Castillo Monastrell 2022, an organic wine, provides an exceptional introduction to enjoying this Mediterranean region and its typical grape variety. Aged for 8 and 10 months in 5000-litre foudres and small 500-litre foudres.

The iconic grape variety of the Jumilla D.O., Monastrell, is the basis for Casa Castillo Monastrell 2022. The grapes come from a selection of vineyards located throughout the Casa Castillo estate. The vines are between 6 and 36 years old and grow in sandy and calcareous loam soils. The destemmed grapes underwent traditional fermentation at a controlled temperature of between 30º and 32º degrees. Maceration took place for between 12 and 14 days, followed by malolactic fermentation in small vats and barrels. The wine was finally aged for 8 and 10 months in 5000 litre foudres and small 500 litre foudres.
This single-varietal Monastrell accounts for almost half of the winery's production. It has a very affordable price and good scores. For instance, the last three vintages (2020, 2019, 2018) received ratings of above 90 points from Wine Advocate.
Casa Castillo (1991) is a boutique family winery committed to terroir and estate wines. In the early 1990s José María Vicente decided to take the leap to winemaking, using the vineyards of the estate that his grandfather had bought in the 1940s.
The estate is located on the high plateau of Jumilla, on slopes up to 760 metres above sea level, sheltered by the Sierra del Molar mountain range. In the 1980s, José María and his father Nemesio set about restructuring the vineyard. And after remodelling the old winery on the estate, he launched the first wines on the market in 1993.
Casa Castillo was one of the pioneers in exploiting the potential of the Monastrell variety to produce high-quality wines. And today its name is synonymous with quality not only in the D.O. Jumilla D.O., but also in Spain. Its prestige is largely based on the preservation of these old Monastrell vineyards, many of them with ungrafted vines.
The red Casa Castillo Monastrell 2022 (D.O. Jumilla) is ideal with rice dishes with meat or chicken, as well as smoked salmon.

Casa Castillo was one of the pioneers in recognizing the potential of the monastrell grape for producing high-quality wines. Today, it is a benchmark winery for quality, not only in the D.O. Jumilla but also on a national level. Its prestige is largely based on the preservation of those old dry-farmed monastrell vineyards, many of which are planted on their own rootstock.
