Rioja whites are on the rise, as the sales figures show. Every year they are gaining a bigger share of the market and national and international recognition. In this flourishing golden age, Viura, the region’s star variety, is giving way to other native grapes such as Tempranillo Blanco, which accounts for 15% of the blend. Both grape varieties are combined in Carlos Serres 125 Aniversario 2023, a fascinating white from a historic winery that’s been aged on the lees and which you’ll only find at Vinoselección.

General Information

Carlos Serres 125 Aniversario 2023 is made from 85% Viura and 15% Tempranillo Blanco. Tempranillo Blanco is native and exclusive to the D.O.Ca. Rioja and is cultivated in smaller quantities. The result of a natural mutation of a red Tempranillo vine, it was first found in a vineyard in Murillo de Río Leza in 1988. With smaller clusters and berries than the red variety, it produces wines with intense fruity and floral aromas and a powerful great personality.

All the Viura and Tempranillo Blanco grapes are produced through arrangements that the winery has with an exclusive group of winegrowers in the area around Haro and Briones. The winery jointly manages the cultivation of the vineyards to ensure the maximum quality of the berries, with continuous monitoring throughout the growth cycle.

The grapes were harvested by hand. The whole grapes were briefly cold macerated and the must was then fermented for 15 days at a controlled temperature of between 12º C and 15º C to fully preserve the varietal expression of the Viura and Tempranillo Blanco varieties. The wine was then aged for two months on its lees in tanks.

The Carlos Serres winery is named after its founder, a well-known wine consultant born in Orleans who was a pioneer in setting up business in Rioja after the phylloxera epidemic spread to France. Impressed by the grape-growing conditions in Rioja, in 1896 he established his own winery in Haro’s station district, where he introduced ageing in Bordeaux style. He was also a pioneer in exporting Rioja wine. The Vivanco family bought Bodegas Carlos Serres in 2000. The new owners revamped the style of its wines.

Carlos Serres wines come from the vineyards on El Estanque, a 60-hectare estate that’s located in Haro (La Rioja), like the winery itself. Its calcareous-clay, gravelly soils are well-suited to the traditional grape varieties.

Carlos Serres 125 Aniversario 2023 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with appetisers, nuts and hors d'oeuvres.

Tasting notes

Pale, bright yellow colour. Displays fresh aromas of apple and pineapple, with light touches of white flowers. Fresh and very fruity on the attack with a great balance between acidity and fruit, and a nice long finish.

Creators' opinion

Despliega aromas frescos a manzana y piña, con ligeros toques a flores blancas. En boca es fresco, muy afrutado con un gran equilibrio entre la acidez y la fruta, y una persistencia larga y agradable.

The winery

Bodegas Carlos Serres

The historic winery Carlos Serres is named after its founder, a renowned wine consultant born in Orleans, who was a pioneer in settling in Rioja after the arrival of phylloxera in France. Amazed by the winemaking conditions offered by Rioja, Carlos Serres founded his own winery in the Barrio de la Estación of Haro in 1896. From there, he became a precursor of wine aging following the Bordeaux model. He also stood out as a pioneer in the export of Rioja wine. In the year 2000, the Vivanco family acquired 100% of Bodegas Carlos Serres, leading to a significant renewal of the winery's wines and the construction of new facilities in the municipality of Haro, but outside the Barrio de la Estación.

The wines of Carlos Serres are made with grapes from the El Estanque estate, which spans 60 hectares and is located in Haro (La Rioja), as is the winery itself. The soils of the estate, clay-limestone with the presence of gravel, are ideal for cultivating traditional grape varieties. The winery is committed to using concrete tanks for winemaking, aiming to maximize the fruity expression of each variety (the porosity of concrete allows for micro-oxygenation).

In July 2020, Bodegas Carlos Serres achieved the Wineries for Climate Protection certification. This seal recognizes the commitment to sustainability and environmental care, currently held by only 27 wineries in Spain.
