Carchelo Ciento80 2020, an organically certified wine, is made chiefly from Monastrell grapes (85%), enhanced with Syrah and Garnacha. It was grown on vineyards between 20 and 40 years old located on slopes in the Paraje Sierra del Carche at an altitude of between 600 and 750 metres, in poor soils with a limestone surface layer and sandy-loam underlayers, which lend the grapes concentration and freshness. That is why it displays ‘Viñedos de paraje’ on the label.
Harvesting was carried out by hand. The grapes underwent maceration and alcoholic and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel vats. This wine was finally matured for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Long before guru Robert Parker named the D.O. Jumilla as one of the most promising wine regions in Spain, Bodegas Carchelo (1990) already enjoyed success both at home and abroad. Its reds have helped put the name of this historical place in Murcia on the world wine map.
Founded in 1990 in Jumilla, Bodegas Carchelo is heir to a winegrowing tradition that dates back three generations. Its facilities stand at the foot of the Sierra del Carche and are equipped with cutting-edge technology. It owns 100 hectares of vines cultivated with Monastrell – the star variety in eastern Spain – and other national and foreign grapes. The firm’s focus on Monastrell vines planted at high altitudes (600 metres) and the blends it creates with other varieties are two of its distinctive features.
Carchelo Ciento80 Viñedos de Paraje 2020 (D.O. Jumilla) is good with spaghetti with tomato sauce and Ibérico deli meats.
Appearance: Deeply pigmented with bright russet highlights in the rim and intense ruby-red in the middle of the glass.
Nose: Predominant aromas of elegant fresh fruit, with subtle notes of spices such as liquorice, black pepper, Mediterranean herbs and cloves.
Palate: Well structured, complex and flavourful with elegant tannins and balanced acidity making for a fresh, harmonious whole with a long, resiny and minerally finish.
Long before the guru Robert Parker highlighted Jumilla as one of Spain's most promising wine regions, Bodegas Carchelo (1990) was already thriving both domestically and internationally. For 30 years, its red wines have carried the name of this historic Murcian town across the globe. This is, therefore, a visionary winery in the promotion of Jumilla, a pioneer in believing in monastrell -the queen grape of the area- to produce quality wines, at a time when production in the region was limited to rustic wines sold in bulk to be blended with others.
Bodegas Carchelo inherits a winemaking tradition that goes back three generations. Its facilities are located at the foot of the Sierra del Carche and are equipped with the latest technologies. Regarding the vineyard, it spans 100 hectares cultivated with monastrell –the queen grape of Levante-, as well as other national and international varieties. The focus on monastrell vines planted at high altitudes (600 m) and their blending with other varieties are two of the distinctive traits of this winery.
