Barón de Chirel Verdejo Viñas Centenarias 2022 is a unique single-varietal wine, both for its origin and for the added value provided by its careful and measured aging in wood. The centenary Rioja winery Herederos del Marqués de Riscal extends its expertise to other production areas such as D.O. Rueda and V.T. Castilla y León to craft high-quality white wines, infused with all the personality of the lands they come from.
In the case of this wine, its character was shaped by the verdejo grapes used, sourced from pre-phylloxera vines planted, in some cases, at altitudes of up to 900 meters above sea level, in the Segovian areas of Aldeanueva del Codonal and Aldehuela. The acidity and the more granitic composition of the soils in this part of Segovia give the varietal a distinctive profile compared to what it exhibits in Rueda. The production process of Barón de Chirel Verdejo Viñas Centenarias 2022 began with the manual harvest of the grapes in 20-kilo boxes. Once at the winery, they underwent a double selection process on sorting tables, first for clusters and then for whole berries, and only the free-run juice obtained was used for vinification. After fermentation, the wine underwent 9 months of aging in Stockinger Austrian oak vats.
With the wood aging, Herederos del Marqués de Riscal aimed to give Barón de Chirel Verdejo Viñas Centenarias 2022 greater depth and structure while maintaining the characteristic mineral touch imparted by its terroir. Due to its density and length, it will pair perfectly with fish in sauce, cheeses, legumes, grilled vegetables, white meats, and roasted lamb. Additionally, its natural acidity promises good evolution in the bottle.
Barón de Chirel Verdejo Viñas Centenarias displays a bright golden yellow color.
Intense aromas reminiscent of stone fruits with an aniseed and balsamic background.
On the palate, it is fresh and unctuous, long and dense.
Founded in 1858 in Elciego (Rioja Alavesa), Herederos del Marqués de Riscal is the oldest winery in Rioja alongside Marqués de Murrieta. In 1862, it marketed its first bottled wines, quickly garnering awards and recognition. Since then, it has maintained a prestigious trajectory, becoming one of the Spanish wineries with the greatest international projection (its wines are present in more than 100 countries). In 1972, it expanded its scope to the D.O. Rueda, producing its first white wines there. The year 2006 marked another milestone for Marqués de Riscal with the inauguration of the City of Wine in Elciego: a spectacular complex surrounding the old family winery, designed by architect Frank O. Gehry, featuring a hotel, fine dining restaurants, and a Vinotherapy center.
The World’s Best Vineyards 2020 list ranked Marqués de Riscal as the sixth-best wine tourism destination in the world.
In the D.O.Ca. Rioja, Herederos del Marqués de Riscal owns 540 hectares of its own vineyards and manages another 900 hectares from suppliers; all within the Rioja Alavesa subzone, spread across Elciego and neighboring villages such as Leza, Laguardia, or Villabuena, and cultivated with the grape varieties tempranillo, graciano, mazuelo, and cabernet sauvignon. On the other hand, in the D.O. Rueda, it owns 330 hectares of vineyards planted with verdejo and sauvignon blanc grapes, and oversees 500 hectares of managed vineyards. In 2018, 100% of the estate's vineyards were certified for organic farming. Marqués de Riscal also produces wines under the Vinos de la Tierra de Castilla y León designation.
