Artífice Vidueños 2022 is one of the most unique wines from the Artífice project by Borja Pérez in Tenerife. This white wine is crafted from a blend of albillo criollo, gual, marmajuelo, listán blanco, and forastera gomera from different vineyards in villages in the northwest of the island, such as San Juan de la Rambla, Icod de los Vinos, and Buenavista del Norte. All these varieties are fermented separately in used 500-liter barrels and then assembled in a 1500-liter foudre of the first year. The result is an elegant white with a lot of character.
After being recognized with his previous project Ignios, Borja Pérez decided to create unique wines under the Artífice label. In this innovative project, he produces different wines using native varieties, respecting the fruit to the fullest. Added to this are the predominant soils of the area composed of ash and volcanic rock, the Atlantic climate, and the well-known trade winds.
After the harvest and once the must underwent alcoholic fermentation, malolactic fermentation was carried out in oak foudres, where the wine remained for another 11 months. Artífice Vidueños 2022 is a limited production wine ideal for accompanying appetizers, baked and grilled white fish, white meats, and fish rice dishes.
Intense straw yellow color, clean and bright
On the nose, medium intensity with aromas of stone fruit, slight citrus notes, nutty aromas, and a mineral background.
On the palate, flavorful, with lively acidity that brings freshness, fruity passage (stone fruit), with good persistence showing fruity aromas.
Artífice originates with the aim of paying tribute to all the people from the countryside who have made agriculture their way of life, while preserving, in some way, the winemaking tradition of the Canary Islands.
Although the Pérez family has been working in the wine trade for many years, it was in 2011 when the young Borja Pérez took the lead on this project in Ycoden Daute Isora. He transitioned from being a race car mechanic and fire truck driver to leading his own winemaking project called Ignios Orígenes.
For Borja Pérez, Ignios Orígenes had to be based on the unique characteristics of the area they are in: volcanic soils, an Atlantic climate influenced by trade winds, and unique grape varieties such as the white marmajuelo and the red listán negro, baboso negro, or vijariego.
After gaining recognition with the Ignios project, the winemaker from Tenerife created different wines under the Artífice brand. With this project, he preserves old vineyards from small local growers with low production, from whom he buys the grapes. In these vineyards, a reasonable viticulture is practiced, with good advisory work for the growers and minimal intervention in the winemaking process. The aim is to craft authentic wines, enhancing native varieties and always respecting the fruit.
In his winemaking approach, Borja Pérez does not reject technological innovations; he simply emphasizes that they should be used when necessary, but never to alter the wine's style. Pérez oversees all processes of winemaking, from working in the field to the sale of the final product.
