Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon

Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon (1999) is Dominique Lafon’s project in the southernmost part of Burgundy, in the Mâconnais region. Conceived as a rigorous exploration of the qualitative potential of this historic area, the domaine represents one of the most successful reinterpretations of southern Burgundy Chardonnay, combining technical precision, respectful viticulture and an outstanding price-to-quality ratio.

After establishing his international reputation at Domaine des Comtes Lafon in Meursault, Dominique Lafon turned his attention to the Mâconnais, a region traditionally associated with accessible, high-volume wines. In 1999 he acquired 7.5 hectares in the communes of Milly-Lamartine and Bussières, convinced that their limestone soils and climate could produce wines of great purity and character. From the outset, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon was conceived not as a secondary project, but as a winery with its own identity, focused exclusively on expressing Chardonnay through meticulous viticulture and a minimal-intervention approach in the cellar.

Today it cultivates around 14 hectares of vineyards, mainly in the appellations Mâcon-Milly-Lamartine, Mâcon-Uchizy, Mâcon-Bussières and Viré-Clessé. These vineyards lie on predominantly limestone soils with marl, ideal for producing tense, expressive Chardonnays with a marked mineral identity. The gradual expansion of the vineyard has allowed the domaine to craft an increasingly precise range, always focusing on selected micro-parcels and moderate yields. The result is a collection of wines that faithfully reflect each site, from more direct and accessible expressions to deeper and more complex cuvées.

From its earliest years, Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon has embraced organic viticulture, progressively evolving towards biodynamic practices. Soil work, elimination of chemical herbicides and pesticides, and respect for natural cycles are fundamental pillars of the project.

Today, day-to-day vineyard and winery management is overseen by winemaker Caroline Gon, who supervises both organic and biodynamic farming and winemaking. Her approach is based on constant observation of the vineyard and the search for a natural balance that yields healthy, ripe and expressive grapes without artifice.

In the winery, wines are made with a minimalist approach aimed at preserving Chardonnay purity and terroir identity. Fermentations are spontaneous with native yeasts and take place mainly in foudres and used barrels, avoiding oak influence on the aromatic profile. Lees ageing adds texture and complexity without losing freshness, resulting in balanced, precise wines with notable gastronomic versatility. The style of Les Héritiers du Comte Lafon is defined by tension, aromatic clarity and elegance, directly linked to the Lafon family’s historic philosophy.

The range includes different expressions from Mâcon and Viré-Clessé, all made exclusively from Chardonnay. From fresh, straightforward Mâcon wines to more structured and complex Viré-Clessé cuvées, the wines offer an honest and refined interpretation of contemporary Mâconnais. With an annual production of around 150,000 bottles, the domaine maintains a balance between scale and artisanal rigor.
