In the epicenter of one of the most prestigious wine appellations in the world, the French Saint Émilion, in the locality of Saint-Étienne-de-Lisse, between Pavie-Macquin and La Clotte, stands Château Valandraud, the renowned winery of the esteemed vigneron Jean-Luc Thunevin and his wife Murielle Andraud.
The couple’s desire to own a vineyard and produce their own wine materialized in 1989, with the acquisition of a small plot of just over half a hectare near Saint-Émilion. The combination of its location in the Fongaban valley and Murielle's surname gave rise to its name, Château Valandraud.
Soon, the estate began to grow at the same pace as its vineyard, which today spans an area of 10 hectares, predominantly planted with the red variety merlot, followed by cabernet sauvignon, malbec, and carmenère, as well as the white varieties sauvignon blanc, semillon, and sauvignon gris. Since 2012, the winery has been classified as Premier Grand Cru Classé B, the second-highest classification for wines in Bordeaux.
In addition to the exceptional quality of its wines, Château Valandraud is famous for being one of the pioneering wineries of the garage wine movement, initiated in the mid-1990s by Thunevin himself.
