It is one of the smallest wineries in Saint-Émilion Grand Cru, but, in all likelihood, also one of the most unique. Château Croix de Labrie is the project of the couple Axelle and Pierre Courdurié, oenologist and vigneron respectively, which began in 2013 with the purchase of an estate located in the commune of Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, right in the heart of the A.O.C.
The fragmentation of its vineyard into small plots, reminiscent of the mosaic that is Burgundy, the other great French wine region, is one of the distinctive features of this Bordeaux estate. On its little more than two and a half hectares of land, it boasts three clearly differentiated terroirs: Badon (near Pavie), Saint-Sulpice (neighboring Valandraud), and Saint-Christophe-des-Bardes, a plot located next to the château, dating back to 1687. All three, however, share a clear dominance of the merlot variety, which accounts for 98% of the total planted vines.
Axelle Courdurié herself, with the luxury advice of the renowned oenologist Michel Rolland, rigorously oversees the vineyard, from pruning to harvest, as well as the work in the winery, with special emphasis on vinification and aging. At Château Croix de Labrie, the smallest details are deemed essential: plowing is done by horse, grapes are sorted one by one by hand, and the use of chemicals is minimized as much as possible. Their creations, considered among the first garage wines of the appellation, are remarkable for their precision, refinement, and the high scores they regularly receive from specialized critics.
