Russian River Valley

Located in Sonoma County, California, Russian River Valley is an American Viticultural Area (AVA) recognized in 1983. It encompasses one-sixth of the vineyards planted in the aforementioned county and stretches around the Russian River, bordered to the south by the towns of Sebastopol and Santa Rosa and to the north by Forestville and Healdsburg. Its most renowned wines are those crafted from cool-climate varieties, specifically chardonnay and pinot noir. Viticulture in this area dates back to the 19th century, introduced by European immigrants from Mediterranean countries who settled there, planting their own vineyards for family consumption. Soon, the activity experienced significant growth, and by the early 20th century, nearly 200 wineries were recorded in the valley.
Climate
The predominant climate of the valley is cool with significant influence from the fog produced by the proximity of the Pacific Ocean.
Soil
There are mainly three distinct types of soils: Goldridge, composed of sandy loam, the more clayey Sebastopol, and the alluvial soil near the river.
