The D.O. Monterrei (Ourense) is probably the least known designation of origin in Galicia, but one of its most emerging areas. It is the only Galician designation that belongs to the Duero basin, featuring a temperate Mediterranean climate with continental tendencies, influenced by the Atlantic Ocean, where both white and red grape varieties thrive. The D.O. Monterrei is divided into two subzones: the Monterrei Valley and the Monterrei Hillside, and has clay, slate, and granitic-sandy soils.
In this region, wine has been produced since Roman times, and it was during the Middle Ages that vine cultivation expanded thanks to religious orders. In the past decade of the 1990s, a recovery of the winemaking sector in the area began, focusing on the cultivation of native grape varieties.
