The D.O. Monterrei (Ourense) is probably the least known appellation of Galicia but one of its most emerging areas. Here is located the winery Pazos del Rey, ‘the seed’ of the D.O. Monterrei. Pazos del Rey began its journey in 1965 as a cooperative where most of the region's winegrowers brought their harvest. After a period of decline, in the nineties, the company changed its philosophy to prioritize quality over quantity, building new and modern facilities that make Pazos del Rey a winery prepared to produce small batches of quality wines.
In 2007, one of the most prominent wine groups in the country, Avanteselecta, decided to incorporate Pazos del Rey, convinced of the potential of the D.O. Monterrei. Currently, Pazos del Rey manages 25 hectares of vineyard, almost all located on the “ladeiras” of the Verín valley, where cultivation is divided between the white godello and the red mencía. With godello, they produce the white wine Pazos de Monterrey; and with mencía, the red wine Sila Mencía, aged in French oak barrels. The diversity of soils and microclimates on the slopes results in wines with a distinctive character.
