Located in the province of Málaga, it encompasses five well-differentiated subzones.
Climate
The Axarquía region enjoys a mild Mediterranean climate, slightly cooler and rainier in the mountains. In the northern subzone, the climate is continental, with cold winters and hot summers. The western coast is warmer and less rainy, while the climate in the sierra is mild.
Soil
Five subzones are distinguished. In Axarquía, there are steep slopes with slate soils. In Sierra de Montes, the soils are Cambrian slate and shallow. In the north, on the Antequera plain, the soils are brown-limestone. At the border with Cádiz, on the western coast, the lands are albariza, and in the mountainous area, the soils are sandy and silty-clay.
