Jorge Ordóñez and Co

With the 2004 harvest, the wines of this young winery were born, located in the municipality of Almáchar, in the heart of the Axarquía region of Málaga, a mountainous area with steep slopes and slate soils, near the Mediterranean, one of the oldest winemaking regions in Europe. Jorge Ordóñez & Co was the first winery to establish itself in this locality, and its bold move was to produce wines where the grapes had always been destined for raisins. Another innovative aspect of this oenological project was entrusting the winemaking to Austrian winemaker Alois Kracher, who was the undisputed number one in sweet wines in his country. In 2008, the project took shape alongside his son Gerhard Kracher, a group of entrepreneurs from Málaga, with importer Jorge Ordóñez at the helm, and his sister Victoria. Their philosophy is based on innovation and the constant pursuit of quality. Jorge Ordóñez & Co. produces naturally sweet wines from old Moscatel de Alejandría vineyards, under the D.O. Málaga and D.O. Sierras de Málaga. A true homage to the past, crafting naturally sweet wines that allow the winery to revive a style of Málaga wine from before the 17th century, when, with the first exports, the practice of fortifying wine was introduced to preserve it during long sea voyages. The main grape variety in the Axarquía is Moscatel de Alejandría, a large-berried, highly aromatic variety that has always been associated with these lands. It produces wines rich in sugars, with unmistakable aromas of honey and orange blossom, fresh and sweet grapes. Undoubtedly, the greatest challenge for Alois Kracher in this winery was the creation of Esencia de Jorge Ordóñez & Co., with which, in 2004, he opened a new path in the vinification of Moscatel in Málaga.
