Extremadura

The official regulation of the Geographical Indication Vinos de la Tierra de Extremadura is a natural consequence of the creation in 1997 of the Denomination of Origin Ribera del Guadiana, a designation that, for obvious territorial reasons, excluded a large part of the wine sector in Extremadura. Through an Order dated December 1999, the Ministry of Agriculture of the Junta de Extremadura approved the creation of the new designation “Vinos de la Tierra de Extremadura,” which includes all the municipalities of Cáceres and Badajoz, a province that accounts for 90% of the vineyards.

The body responsible for ensuring that these Vinos de la Tierra meet the required characteristics is the Fraud Defense Service of the Directorate General of Commerce of the Junta de Extremadura. Its inspectors monitor the traceability of the product and ensure that companies in the sector comply with the requirements established in current legislation and the accuracy of the information on their labeling.

Climate
Continental with mild or pronounced thermal fluctuations depending on the area. Precipitation ranges from 350mm/year in the driest locations to 750mm/year in the rainiest areas. The main issues are summer drought and spring frosts.
Soil
In this PGI, we can find many types of soil ranging from clay-loam terrains in the Vegas Bajas del Guadiana; very sandy surfaces in the Vegas Altas; and slate extensions on the slopes of Cañamero. There are also very fertile and nutrient-rich lands like those in Tierra de Barros and brown-acidic soils in the Montánchez area.
