Cangas

The D.O.P. Cangas brings together the finest wines currently produced in Asturias. This production area is located in the southwest of the Principality and includes the municipalities of Cangas del Narcea, Allande, Grandas de Salime, Illano, Pesoz, Ibias, and Tineo. Vine cultivation in these lands dates back to the 9th century and reached its peak in the 19th century. At that time, the planted vineyard area covered 1,952 hectares, and the wines produced achieved awards in both national and international competitions.

The establishment of the mining industry and rural depopulation led to the abandonment of viticulture. Since 2008, the Denominación de Origen Protegida Cangas has existed, currently encompassing 55 hectares of vineyards, most of which are over 80 years old, cultivated and managed by 53 winegrowers and 6 wineries. The arrangement of the vineyards on steep, mountainous terrains with difficult access makes heroic viticulture, as practiced in other production areas like Ribeira Sacra or Priorat, the only viable option.
Climate
The southwest of Asturias, where the D.O.P. Cangas is located, benefits from a special microclimate characterized by lower rainfall and more hours of sunshine than the rest of the region, creating ideal conditions for vine cultivation.
Soil
The small, and sometimes fragmented, plots that make up the vineyard of the D.O.P. Cangas are arranged on terraces, situated on steep slopes, composed of slate soils.
