In the winery, we can distinguish two different styles of wines. On one hand, there are the three traditional Rioja-style wines, but with a more innovative touch. The Crianza, Reserva, and Gran Reserva are a blend of the three typical varieties of the area (tempranillo, mazuelo, and graciano), which allow for a long aging process both in barrel and bottle. On the other hand, we have the Iñigo Amézola wines, white and red, made from the selection of our best viura and tempranillo grapes, respectively. With these wines, we aim to highlight the uniqueness of our land and its fruit, which is why the bottle aging is much longer than the barrel aging.
Professional career
The winery was re-established by brothers Íñigo and Javier Amézola in 1987, when they restored the cellars and the old family winery dating back to 1816. They expanded the winery while maintaining the same style as the original one, surrounded by vineyards. In doing so, they preserved the French château style they had inherited, setting it apart from other wineries in La Rioja. The two brothers passed away in the 1990s, and María and Cristina Amézola, Íñigo's daughters, became Spain's youngest female winemakers at 18 and 17 years old, respectively. The Amézola sisters continued producing the traditional Rioja wines that had given the winery its name, while adding their own personal touch. However, their innovative spirit, along with the knowledge that their lands in Torremontalbo yield particularly unique wines, led them to introduce two new wines, the Iñigo Amézola, both white and red, which reflect the distinct character of the fruit from each plot.
