Amézola de la Mora is an impressive 'château' with a special location in the Rioja Alta, in Torremontalvo. It’s one of the few Rioja firms where all the vineyards surround the winery, in the purest Bordeaux style – 60 hectares that have reached full maturity, from which this fantastic Señorío de Amézola Reserva 2018 is made. Aged for 33 months in mostly French oak barrels, it’s highly representative of the classical style.

General Information

Señorío de Amézola Reserva 2018 is a delicious blend of 85% Tempranillo, 10% Mazuelo and 5% Graciano. The grapes come from the vineyards surrounding the winery. Fermentation took place in tanks at a controlled temperature of 28ºC for 28 days, followed by natural malolactic fermentation. Aged for 33 months in barrels (70% French oak and 30% American oak), and a further long period of refinement in the bottle.

Amézola de la Mora is one of the most interesting wineries in Rioja Alta. Founded by the brothers Íñigo and Javier Amézola in 1986, it is located in Torremontalbo, in the heart of Rioja Alta, in a privileged enclave at the confluence of the Ebro and Najerilla rivers. Bodegas Amézola de la Mora’s facilities were constructed using part of the old cellars and caves from the first half of the nineteenth century that already existed in their current location, preserving the charm of yesteryear.

Surrounding the building are the 60 hectares of vineyards that supply the winery, in the style of the Bordeaux châteaux, which allows absolute control over the grapes throughout their maturation and rapid transport to the facilities.

Cristina Downes, Íñigo's widow, took the reins of the winery in the late 1990s.  And since 2005, their daughters Cristina and María Amézola Downes, the fifth generation, have continued the excellent work begun by their father. The winery has been superbly and subtly revamped, including more moderate ageing, the introduction of French oak – in addition to American oak – and a more fruit-forward profile. Today its wines stand for a classic style.

Señorío de Amézola Reserva 2018 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect to pair with potato stew with ribs or spaghetti bolognese.

The winery

Bodegas Amézola de la Mora

The origins of Bodegas Amézola de la Mora date back to the early 19th century in Torremontalbo (La Rioja Alta). At the end of that same century, the phylloxera plague forced its owner to indefinitely halt winemaking activities. This pause lasted until 1986, when brothers Íñigo and Javier Amézola, great-grandsons of the founder, revived the winery and turned it into one of the most prominent in the region.

Although the winery is currently managed by Íñigo's daughters, the owner is Cristina Amézola Downes, their mother and Íñigo's widow. This generational change ensures that the project will endure over time with the same clarity as before. The château-style winery features cellars and underground caves, along with 70 hectares of its own vineyards. It produces a comprehensive range of seven wines, all of which boast more than notable quality.
