Cerdeña

The island of Sardinia (Sardegna) is one of the most attractive, interesting, and important wine regions in all of Italy. With just under 30,000 hectares of cultivated vineyards, Sardinia boasts a mix of diverse soils, varied crops, and different microclimates, which enable the production of high-quality wines. Thanks to the union of tradition and innovation, Sardinia has become a true benchmark for wines from the Mediterranean country.

The reigning grape in Sardinia is the red variety cannonau (garnacha). Cultivated throughout the island, but primarily in the central area, its original lands are Ogliastra and Barbagia. It is used to produce wines of great richness and personality. Nowadays, these wines are increasingly aged in wood, making them more complex and long-lasting.

In the north of the island, we find the subregions of Gallura and Sassarese. This territory is characterized by limestone and iron-rich soils, which produce mineral wines such as the fantastic vermentinos. 80% of the areas where the vermentino variety is cultivated in Italy are located in Sardinia, and along with cannonau, it is the most representative grape of the island. It is also the typical grape of the D.O.C. Alghero.

In the Oristano area, we find vernaccia wines, produced under a layer of flor. In the same province of Cagliari, a series of attractive and delicate wines are produced thanks to white grape varieties such as nasco and nuragus, and red grape varieties like cagnulari.

The grape varieties cultivated in Sardinia are completely different from those in other wine regions of Italy. Although we have mentioned some of them, the most planted grapes on this Mediterranean island are varieties originating from Spain and France, such as cannonau (garnacha), monica, carignano (cariñena), pascale, and bovale (bobal). Regarding white varieties, we can mention grapes like nuragus, vermentino, and malvasia di Sardegna, as well as trebbiano toscano, sangiovese, and the native grape vernaccia.

As for designations of origin, the only D.O.C.G. recognized is Vermentino di Gallura. Additionally, the island has 16 D.O.C. and
