Saint-Joseph is one of the controlled designation of origin (A.O.C.) areas in the northern Rhône Valley. Located on the right bank of the river, opposite Hermitage, this production area encompasses 26 municipalities in the Ardèche and Loire departments, and its vineyards are characterized by narrow terraces on steep slopes.
The most renowned wines of Saint-Joseph are its refined yet powerful reds, mainly made from syrah, which account for 90% of the production. The remaining 10% consists of white wines made from roussanne and marsanne. The AOC area spans 26 municipalities in the Ardèche and Loire departments.
