Corton-Charlemagne

Officially recognized in 1937 and encompassing the communes of Aloxe-Corton, Pernand-Vergelesses, and Ladoix-Serrigny, the A.O.C. Corton-Charlemagne is the designation for white wine in the Côte de Beaune region of Burgundy. Its name comes from Emperor Charlemagne, who is said to have once owned the hill of Corton, where the vineyards are now located. Legend has it that these were planted exclusively with white varieties, as these wines were his wife's favorites. Today, chardonnay is the only permitted grape variety.
