The Zarcillo Awards were established in 1991 to promote Spanish wines by the initiative of the Departments of Culture and Tourism, Agriculture, and Livestock of the Regional Government of Castilla y León. During the first years, the competition was held nationally and annually, growing both in the number of entries and in prestige. In 1999, the Department of Agriculture and Livestock of the Regional Government of Castilla y León decided to open the competition to international participation and change its frequency, which has since been held every two years. The Zarcillo Awards are sponsored by the O.I.V. and are part of the World Federation of Major International Wine and Spirits Competitions (VinoFed).
