Carlos San Pedro’s new winery that’s impressed critics
Carlos San Pedro is among the most renowned wine producers of Rioja Alavesa, where he’s turned Pujanza into one of the most important wineries in the region. With his new venture, Voelos, he’s taken his mastery to Rioja Alta – specifically the Sonsierra area, the new mecca of Spanish wine. Here he designed Voelos Crianza 2020 (an Excellent vintage), a red that’s modern in appearance but classical at heart and has been awarded a 91-point score from Robert Parker Wine Advocate.

General Information
Carlos San Pedro’s interpretation of the vineyards of Sonsierra, in Rioja Alta, has led to a new family of wines spearheaded by the Crianza. We’ve got the latest vintage: Voelos Crianza 2020, a year that was rated Excellent in the D.O.Ca. Rioja.
It’s made from selected Tempranillo grapes grown in vineyards with calcareous-clay soils located in Sonsierra, at altitudes of between 400 and 650 metres. The grapes were harvested by hand and underwent spontaneous fermentation at 24‒26º C in 15,000-litre stainless steel vats. Aged for 12 months in French oak barrels.
Carlos San Pedro belongs to a generation of Rioja winemakers who helped establish the D.O.Ca. Rioja as Spain’s leading wine region. Hailing from a grape-growing family of Rioja Alavesa, in 2002 he set up his own firm, Pujanza, which has carved out a place up among the great names on the Spanish and international markets. Its reds are consistently praised by the most famous critics like Robert Parker.
Voelos is his new range of wines. To design them he sought out a new area: Sonsierra, in Rioja Alta, where he produces fresh, fruity and balanced wines designed for everyday drinking.
Voelos Crianza 2020 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is ideal with beef ragout or beef Wellington.
Creators' opinion
Maroon with cherry-red edges. Clear and bright. Very fresh, fruity nose that instantly makes you feel like drinking it. Predominant enticing red fruits, blackberries and blueberries together with notes from ageing and balsamic aromas. Balanced, medium-bodied, smooth tannins and a long finish. This is a flavoursome and appealing wine, perfect for enjoying with a meal.
The winery
Carlos San Pedro belongs to a generation of Rioja winemakers who have helped to establish D.O.Ca. Rioja as the leading wine region in Spain. Heir to a lineage of winegrowers from Rioja Alavesa, the San Pedro family, who have based their philosophy on vineyard ownership to produce wines from the very vine, reflecting the terroir. In 2002, Carlos San Pedro launched his own project: Bodegas y Viñedos Pujanza, a winery that has positioned itself among the greatest, both in the national and international markets. His red wines have always been endorsed by the most renowned critics, such as Robert Parker.
Voelos is his new wine collection. To craft them, he has sought another area: the Sonsierra, a region located north of the Ebro River and south of the Sierra de Cantabria. Here, he creates fresh, fruity, and balanced red wines, designed for everyday enjoyment.
