Built in the year 79 A.D., the Via XVIII or Via Nova was the Roman road of 318 kilometers that connected the cities of Astorga and Braga, and crossed the entire Valdeorras region and its different villages. Via XVIII 2021 commemorates this historic route and pays tribute to the typical red grapes of the area: mencía, garnacha tintorera, grao, merenzao, and albarello, which make up the delicious coupage with which it is made.
After a laborious manual selection of the best fruits from different plots and various terroirs (from clay soils with black slate to sand, passing through granite and alluvial), at between 400 and 550 meters of altitude, Bodegas Viña Somoza processed the grapes on the same day of harvest. Subsequently, fermentation was carried out with spontaneous yeasts and at controlled temperature, long cold macerations, with partly destemmed grapes and the other part with whole bunches, and the pressing and subsequent racking to barrel. The production process ended with a 12-month aging, without batonnage, in French oak barrels, resulting in a red wine with an intense aroma of red fruits and velvety on the palate.
Bodegas Viña Somoza is one of the most important wineries in the D.O. Valdeorras. Founded in A Rúa, in the year 2000, by Víctor Fernández, it bases its foundations on the recovery of old vineyards of native varieties from which unique wines with all the Galician essence and authenticity emerge, such as this Via XVIII 2021 that the Club brings to you.
Vía XVIII exhibits a great aromatic personality where red fruits mainly coexist, purple flowers, and aromatic herbs that contribute to the vegetal and fresh part. Direct on the palate, deep and very long, inviting to drink with each sip.
