Vetus Orgánico 2021 is a single-estate wine where Bodegas Vetus has committed to minimal intervention winemaking, both in the vineyard and in the winery. It comes from old tinta de Toro vines, cultivated on the estate surrounding the winery in Villabuena del Puente (Zamora), and has been aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels, which gives it complexity, balance, and an authentic expression of the terroir.

General Information

Vetus launches the fourth vintage of its elegant organic red wine: Vetus Orgánico 2021. This wine is made exclusively from Tinta de Toro grapes sourced from its own organically certified vineyards. The vines, over 30 years old, are cultivated on a 20-hectare estate surrounding the winery in Villabuena del Puente (Zamora), on slopes located at 700 meters above sea level on loamy clay soils.

In the vineyard, Vetus applies a philosophy of minimal intervention, minimizing phytosanitary treatments as much as possible. When necessary, only natural products are used—such as mimosa extracts, horsetail, or algae—that not only respect the vine but also promote the biodiversity of the environment. Additionally, a spontaneous vegetal cover is maintained throughout the year, which helps prevent erosion, improves soil structure, controls plant vigor, and encourages the presence of beneficial insects.

With the creation of Bodegas Vetus, Artevino Family Wineries sought to establish itself in a region with great winemaking potential and valuable old vineyards like the D.O. Toro. After a careful search, they found the ideal location near Villabuena del Puente, an area with an extreme climate south of the Duero River. Thus, a small winery was born, committed to meticulous winemaking and estate wines with their own identity.

In addition to Vetus, Artevino Family Wineries includes the wineries Izadi, Finca Villacreces, and Orben, with a presence in some of Spain's most prestigious denominations of origin.

Vetus Orgánico 2021 is ideal to pair with lamb trotters in sauce or oxtail stew.

The winery

Bodegas Vetus

Bodegas Vetus (2003) is the project of the Antón family (Grupo Artevino) in the D.O. Toro. For its development, they acquired an estate in the heart of the denomination. This estate currently houses modern winery facilities inaugurated in 2008 and 20 hectares of vineyards divided into 3 plots with vines of different ages and planting patterns.

Vetus applies precision and environmentally respectful viticulture, with meticulous care of the vines. The tinta de Toro grape is the star of the vineyard, cultivated in trellis and limited to low yields of around 4,000 kg per hectare in favor of quality. The vines are located on slopes with sandy-loam soils and benefit from a climate with significant temperature fluctuations between night and day during the ripening period, which helps produce wines with greater intensity of color and aromas.

The wines of Vetus aim for greater friendliness and balance than traditional reds from Toro. Additionally, the winery produces a white wine under the umbrella of the D.O. Rueda.
