General Information

Versos de Valtuille Mencia 2021 is the result of combining several old Mencía vineyards, with an average age of 75 years. All the vineyards – goblet and trellised – are located in Valtuille de Abajo, with different orientations, on clay, sand and pebble soils, at an altitude of between 500 and 550 m.

Alcoholic fermentation – spontaneous and with native yeasts – was in 7500-litre French oak foudres, large wooden casks (with 10% stalks). Malolactic fermentation was in stainless steel tanks. The resulting red wine was aged for 8 months in 7500-litre French oak foudres.

The Estévez family, originally from Valtuille de Abajo and partially established in Mexico since 1942, always dreamed of returning to their origins and recovering the vineyards of El Bierzo that the libertarian, writer and thinker Antonio Estévez had to abandon during the Spanish Civil War to go into exile in Mexico. These vineyards were a centuries-old heritage, whose origin goes back to the first vineyards that his great-grandfather Ramón bought with the money he had earned working in Brazil at the end of the nineteenth century.

Years later, Helios Estévez, the youngest of Antonio's sons, BY by then a businessman and poet, emigrated to Mexico to be with his father, settled there and started a family; but he always longed to return to El Bierzo. Today, Helios' four children have all joined the family business.

The winery has 12 hectares of goblet vines planted on slopes at an altitude of around 500 m. The average age of the vineyard is 90 years, and it sits on sand and clay soils in the highest areas. The family is committed to environmentally friendly agriculture and production with minimal human intervention, vinifying each plot separately.

Versos de Valtuille Mencía 2021 (D.O. Bierzo) harmonises nicely with a duck confit or duck breast with red fruit sauce.
