Valtravieso Crianza 2020 is a gamble on the altitude of Ribera del Duero, a sensational red with serious ageing, fresh and with mineral character. Critics have already bestowed it with 92 points from Tim Atkin, 91 from Guía Peñín, and 90 from Wine Enthusiast.
In the Piñel de Arriba páramo, at over 915 m altitude, Valtravieso Crianza 2020 expresses the work of a winery that understands wine from precision and origin. Supported by the D.O. Ribera del Duero, this blend of Tinto Fino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon spends at least 12 months in French and American oak barrels, and finishes ageing in bottle to complete 2 years of ageing.
The grapes come from the La Revilla estate and from old plots scattered across the páramo, with calcareous soils and some clay veins. The harvest of 2020 was cool and damp, with smaller berries that allowed long, gentle vinifications, always under meticulous canopy management in the vineyard. The vineyard, averaging 25 years old, combines bush and trellised systems for Tinto Fino, and trellised for Cabernet Sauvignon.
Ricardo Velasco Pla signs a blended wine produced in the traditional way, with indigenous yeasts and fermentations adapted to each terroir. The result is a crianza with personality and depth, faithful to the philosophy of Valtravieso.

Vineyard
Description
Valtravieso Crianza 2020 comes from the Piñel de Arriba plateau, at the La Revilla estate, at an altitude of 915 metres, where the vines have an average age of 25 years and rest on calcareous soils, with some clay veins in certain areas of the estate. The combination of plots with different exposures and altitudes, together with a cool, damp climate in this vintage, marked by high rainfall, favoured a slow ripening and long, gentle vinifications, preserving the quality of the grape. It is made from Tinto Fino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon, varieties that contribute structure, freshness and complexity to a crianza with a mineral personality and great length.
Age
Made from vines of Tinto Fino, Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon from a young vineyard, with an average age of 25 years.
Climate
In the Piñel de Arriba moorland, at over 915 m above sea level, Valtravieso Crianza is born in a cool and humid climate. The 2020 vintage was marked by high rainfall, which favoured slower ripening and allowed the production of a wine with a taut, fresh profile and excellent balance.
Viticulture
Valtravieso Crianza 2020 comes from traditional and very carefully tended viticulture, based on the selection of plots on the La Revilla estate and from other plots on the Piñel de Arriba páramo, located at over 915 m in altitude. The winery has given special care to the crop load in the vineyard to maintain grape quality in a cool, humid vintage, adjusting cultivation work to each zone, with soils, exposures and altitudes different. The result is balanced raw material, with precise fruit and good potential for a serene, long-term maturation.

Valtravieso is a family project led by Pablo González Beteré. The family, in love with Ribera del Duero but with no prior connection to the world of wine, sought to undertake a small project in the area and decided to acquire the Valtravieso winery in 2002. The winery is located on the La Revilla estate in Piñel de Arriba (Valladolid), with a few hectares of vineyard on a plateau at 915 meters above sea level (above the average for Ribera del Duero), which had been operating as a winery for eight years.
In this location, they experience an average temperature 3º C lower, which favors a slower and more balanced ripening of the grapes. Additionally, the significant day-night temperature variations help achieve greater acidity and freshness. On the other hand, the limestone soils promote low yields, between 4000 and 4500 kilos of grapes per hectare, and impart minerality. These conditions define the personality of their wines, in which they aim to faithfully reflect the ‘terroir.’
When the family took over Valtravieso, they were the only ones working the vineyard on the plateau, a now trendy area with other winegrowers. From the 20 hectares of vineyard they originally owned, Valtravieso has grown to 85 hectares of their own vineyards, where they primarily cultivate tempranillo (tinto fino), but also cabernet sauvignon, merlot, malbec, garnacha, and albillo mayor. In winemaking, they apply gentle processes, avoiding extraction, as they prioritize freshness, fine tannins, complexity, and elegance over sheer power.
