Valserrano Crianza 2018 is made by one of the families who carry the history of winegrowing Rioja in their blood. The winery they run is attached to the terroir of Villabuena de Álava, in the Rioja Alavesa subzone, where they produce superb reds like this one solely from grapes grown on their own vineyards. A fruit-forward, potent and vigorous wine that’s very fresh and expressive.

General Information

Valserrano Crianza 2018 is made from a blend of Tempranillo (95%) and Mazuelo (5%) grapes grown on the winery’s best vineyards. It’s been aged for 18 months in American and French oak barrels, followed by a few months in vats to achieve a good blend before bottling.

Viñedos y Bodegas de La Marquesa is a family-run firm whose origins date back to the second half of the nineteenth century, when the Marquis of La Solana joined the group of producers who decided to modernise the Rioja style.

Today the firm is headed by the fourth generation of the Simón family and makes high-quality wines in small quantities exclusively from grapes from the 65 hectares of vineyards they own in Villabuena de Álava (Rioja Alavesa). The vines grow on slopes that descend from the Sierra de Cantabria to the river Ebro and are 35 years old on average.

Valserrano Crianza 2018 (D.O.Ca. Rioja) is perfect with lamb in a chilindrón sauce (onions, red peppers and tomatoes) or stews like green beans with oxtail.

Creators' opinion

The winery

Viñedos y Bodegas de la Marquesa - Valserrano
Bodegas de la Marquesa is one of those wineries that carries the history of Rioja wine in its DNA, as it was one of the pioneers in producing quality wines in this region following Bordeaux methods. Founded in 1880 by the Marqués de La Solana (great-grandfather of the current owners), it has remained linked to the same family ever since. The Simón family currently crafts highly regarded and limited-production wines using only grapes from their own vineyards: 65 hectares.

The 65 hectares of vineyards of Bodegas de la Marquesa stretch across the slopes of the Sierra de Cantabria, in the area of Villabuena de Álava (Rioja Alavesa). The winery has a stock of 2,300 French and American oak barrels and today stands as a magnificent example of a family-run winery where tradition (present in the underground cellars) coexists with cutting-edge technology at the service of winemaking. The result is a modern Rioja, respectful of the values that made it famous over a century ago.
