A selection of old mencía vineyards cultivated on the slate slopes of the Sil River and 9 months of aging in French oak come together masterfully in Valderroa Mencía 2017 to deliver a complex, sweet, and long-lasting wine.
Founded in 1990 by the Prada Gayoso family, Bodegas Valdesil is one of the most powerful wineries in the D.O. Valdeorras. The typicity of their godello whites and mencía reds, like this fantastic Valderroa Carballo 2017, and their excellent winemaking skills form the basis of their well-deserved success.
Valdesil has been one of the key players in the recovery of Godello in Galicia, an excellent native variety capable of competing in quality with any white grape in our country. The winery, located in Córgomo, in the municipality of Vilamartín de Valdeorras in Ourense, has uniquely harnessed the slate slopes of the region, which are responsible for the unmistakable minerality of the wines from this area.
Valdesil is owned by the third generation of the Prada Gayoso family, a family with a long winemaking tradition that, just over a decade ago, decided to recover all the "pezas" (plots) of Godello that had belonged to them in the past. In just a few years and through hard work, the winery has established itself as one of the most important wine producers in the D.O. Valdeorras, with its influence extending to Bierzo with remarkable success. The responsibility for the winery's production lies with the Prada Gayoso family, supported externally by Cristina Mantilla in oenology and José Ramón Lissarrague in viticulture.
