Vinoselección was privileged to present the release of Vetus Orgánico 2018 both worldwide and exclusively for the Spanish market. Now the winery is launching the third vintage of this delicious organic red wine: Vetus 2020. It's made from Tinta de Toro grapes grown in the winery's own organically certified vineyards. The vines, located in the 20-hectare estate surrounding the winery in Villabuena del Puente (Zamora), are more than 30 years old and grow on hillsides at an altitude of 700 metres above sea level in clay-loam soils.
In the vineyard, Vetus limits phytosanitary treatments to a minimum. In addition, when necessary, treatments are carried out using natural products (extracts of mimosa, horsetail, algae, etc.) which are harmless to the vines and beneficial to the native flora and fauna. Furthermore, the winery maintains spontaneous plant cover in the vineyard lanes throughout the year to prevent soil erosion, encourage protective insects, improve texture, prevent compaction and control the vigour of the vines.
The grapes were harvested by hand in small 15-kg crates, and the bunches were sorted. After fermentation in stainless steel tanks, the wine was aged for 12 months in American and French oak barrels, 50% new and 50% second-year.
With Bodegas Vetus (2003), the Artevino group aimed to establish itself in an area with great potential and valuable old vineyards, the D.O. Toro. Artevino began the search for the ideal location for this project and found it in an estate near Villabuena del Puente, an area with an extreme climate in the southern part of the Duero river. This marked the start of a small winery that focuses on a very careful winemaking process and sells estate wines.
In addition to Vetus, the Artevino group is made up of Izadi, Finca Villacreces and Orben, wineries based in Spain's most important D.Os.
Vetus 2020 (D.O. Toro) is ideal with beef cheeks cooked in red wine or Madrid-style tripe.
Bodegas Vetus (2003) is the project of the Antón family (Grupo Artevino) in the D.O. Toro. For its development, they acquired an estate in the heart of the denomination. This estate currently houses modern winery facilities inaugurated in 2008 and 20 hectares of vineyards divided into 3 plots with vines of different ages and planting patterns.
Vetus applies precision and environmentally respectful viticulture, with meticulous care of the vines. The tinta de Toro grape is the star of the vineyard, cultivated in trellis and limited to low yields of around 4,000 kg per hectare in favor of quality. The vines are located on slopes with sandy-loam soils and benefit from a climate with significant temperature fluctuations between night and day during the ripening period, which helps produce wines with greater intensity of color and aromas.
The wines of Vetus aim for greater friendliness and balance than traditional reds from Toro. Additionally, the winery produces a white wine under the umbrella of the D.O. Rueda.
