General Information

Viñas del Bierzo makes the grape variety the centrepiece of the whole process of creating Gran Bierzo Mencía 2020, a single-varietal wine that’s young at heart but comes from old, gobelet-trained vines between 70 and 90 years old. These vines, which grow in moist calcareous and slate soils at an altitude of more than 550 metres, have to be harvested by hand, involving careful selection.

After harvesting the grapes were placed in concrete vats and fermented with native yeast without temperature control. Malolactic fermentation was also spontaneous. El Gran Bierzo Mencía spent three months in French and American oak barrels and a further three in raw concrete. This ensures that just enough flavour is transferred from the wood and does not mask the variety’s characteristic flavours of fruit – raspberry, cherry and blackberry.

Vinos del Bierzo is one of most traditional wineries of the D.O. Bierzo.

This cooperative that started out with 100 partners and currently has nearly 5,000. With more than half a century of experience, it boasts impressive assets as it’s one of the few firms to possess old vines, the most valuable type.

Gran Bierzo Mencía 2020 (D.O. Bierzo) is ideal with grilled entrecote or wild mushrooms sautéed with ham.
