The release of Viñedos y Bodegas Áster’s first vintage – that of 2000 – also marked the start of a love affair between Vinoselección’s subscribers and this firm belonging to the prestigious Grupo La Rioja Alta, S.A. Since then, the legendary Rioja group’s Ribera firm has delighted us with various wines, many of them exclusive, though the one that’s made the biggest impression on you is Finca El Caño, of which we’re now offering you a new version, Áster Finca El Caño Reserva 2019.
Thanks to the more than 40-year friendship between Grupo La Rioja Alta, S.A. and Vinoselección, two decades ago we witnessed closeup the birth of their Ribera del Duero firm: Viñedos y Bodegas Áster.
We’ve been back to the winery to design a unique wine from grapes grown on a specific estate and a plot of special quality, El Caño. Monitoring the wine from the beginning, in close collaboration with the firm’s winemakers, we’ve lavished care on every detail of one of the best harvests of vintages of the past decades in the D.O. Ribera de Duero, the Excellent-rated 2019 vintage.
This wine combines potency, elegance, balance and depth, but it also displays all the character of the Ribera reds, with the balance the Grupo La Rioja Alta, S.A. lends all its wines, which can be enjoyed now but can also be put away for the future.
Attractive cherry-red colour of good intensity.
Fresh, intense and fine nose with prominent aromas of red fruit (strawberries and raspberries) and floral notes (violet) together with hints of dairy (cream) and sweet spices.
Full, flavourful, balanced and fresh in the mouth. Elegant, flowing, fruity and silky palate. Fine tannins and a long, lingering finish to which the fruity, dairy and floral aromas of the nose carry through.
Our unique vineyard, divided into different plots around the winery building, is one of the main concerns of our Ribera del Duero firm based in Anguix (Burgos). El Caño is one of those estates where, in Excellent-rated years like 2019, we select Tinta del País grapes of superb quality to enable us to enjoy the expression of this very special terroir located at an altitude of 800 metres with an extreme continental climate. Its gentle slops ensure different exposures to the sun, lending the wines structure, as well as a natural acidity that guarantees elegance, complexity and great ageing potential.
In the 1990s, the group La Rioja Alta decided to embark on an expansion plan that led to the founding of Bodegas y Viñedos Áster in Ribera del Duero. For this project, the company combined the desire to achieve oenological excellence with the philosophy of using only estate-owned vineyards for wine production. Precisely due to this perfectionist drive, the first wine labeled as Áster did not see the light until the year 2000, when the vines finally produced grapes of sufficient quality for its production.
In 2002, shortly after the launch of its first wine, Áster built its winery in Anguix, a facility equipped with the most modern technology. The 95 hectares of tinta del país vineyards, located between this Burgos municipality and La Horra, have now reached full maturity—most were planted in 1991—and are operating at full capacity.
