General Information

It’s more than half a century since the Fernández Rivera family converted a small winemaking facility in Pesquera de Duero into a winery that ending up marking a before and an after in the history of Spanish wine. Tinto Pesquera is the wine that attracted the attention of all foreign critics and the driving force behind the creation of the D.O. Ribera del Duero back in 1983.

The following generation of the Fernández Rivera family currently runs the winery, which owns 200 hectares of vines beside the facilities where the legendary Tinto Pesquera is made. There, as at all their wineries, the main ingredient is the native Tempranillo variety.

From there we bring you a living legend of Spanish wine, Tinto Pesquera Crianza 2020. The family’s flagship wine, it’s made from bunches of Tempranillo grapes from a vintage rated Excellent by the regulatory board of Ribera del Duero. It’s a wine to enjoy, to boast of, and to savour, one of the best Riberas of all times.

Tasting notes

Attractive, ripe cherry-red in colour with a garnet-red rim, medium-high pigmentation.

Fragrant nose of good aromatic intensity. Initial notes of spice (vanilla and cloves), blended with hints of fruit (blackberries and sloes), followed by touches of toasted oak and ending with subtle, delicate balsamic background notes (eucalyptus).

Flavoursome and fleshy with good structure and great balance between acidity, body and alcohol. The fruity notes blend perfectly with the hints of spice, toast and Mediterranean underbrush on mid-palate. Long, elegant finish marked by hints of black fruit in liquor.

The winery

Tinto Pesquera

Behind this iconic winery is the Fernández Rivera family, originally from Pesquera de Duero (Valladolid). In 1975, this lineage produced the first vintage of Tinto Pesquera in a small 16th-century stone winepress: a revolutionary wine whose name refers to the town where the winery is located and the birthplace of its founders. Tinto Pesquera is considered the first luxury Ribera del Duero wine, at a time when - with the exception of Vega Sicilia - producers were focused on making claretes and very alcoholic reds of limited quality.

The success of Tinto Pesquera was decisive in the recognition of the D.O. Ribera del Duero in 1982, as well as its international projection. The winery gained worldwide fame when the guru Robert Parker awarded 98 points to Tinto Pesquera 1982, comparing it to Pétrus, one of the world's best wines. Tinto Pesquera opened new paths for winemaking with the tempranillo grape, driving a significant qualitative leap. Today, it remains a benchmark brand and the most beloved winery of the Familia Fernández Rivera group.
