Tinto Arroyo is one of our favourite wines from the D.O. Ribera del Duero and we’re always on the alert for new releases. The latest vintage is just out: Tinto Arroyo Reserva 2018, a Tempranillo grown in high-altitude vineyards in Sotillo de la Ribera (Burgos), in the northernmost part of the area. We just love its superbly polished structure and marvellous mouth-filling finish.

Tinto Arroyo Reserva 2018 is made wholly from a selection of Tempranillo grapes from the Miraflores and Sullerto vineyards the winery owns. The berries from these vines ripened slowly due to their location in the northernmost part of the area and their high altitude, and harvesting took place in October.
They were fermented in stainless steel vats at a controlled temperature. The resulting wine was aged for a long 30 months (minimum) in American and French oak barrels followed by a further 24 months in the bottle before being released.
Bodegas S. Arroyo’s vineyards grow in a unique ecosystem: Sotillo de la Ribera (Burgos), where plots and vines are interspersed with wild pine groves and Mediterranean woodlands in the northernmost and highest part of the area, at an altitude of between 900 and 950 metres. Thanks to these raw materials the firm’s wines enjoy a leading position on the Spanish wine scene in terms of quality
Its delicate, fine structure make Tinto Arroyo Reserva 2018 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) the perfect choice for all kinds of meat and fish. We recommend opening the bottle 15 to 20 minutes before serving at a suitable temperature.
COLOUR: Deep cherry-red colour with very noticeable brick red in the edge, clean and bright.
AROMA: Jammy fruit, leather, and subtle tobacco, dark-roast and coffee notes in the nose. Good balance between fruit and wood.
FLAVOUR: Well-structured with smooth, ripe tannins and good balance. Balsamic and patisserie hints and flavours of red fruits with slight touches of nuts such as hazelnuts and bitter almonds in the finish.
Bodegas Santiago Arroyo was founded in 1960 as an association of several winegrowers from Sotillo de la Ribera. In 1994, Santiago Arroyo, the son of a winegrower and winemaker from this locality, took over the reins of the winery and initiated a renovation of the facilities. Thus began the modern history of the winery, now recognized for the consistency of its wines. Today, at over eighty years old, Santiago Arroyo continues to care for his vineyards, totaling 90 hectares divided into 14 different plots, all located in Sotillo de la Ribera and cultivated with tempranillo, the queen grape of Ribera del Duero.
The tempranillo, under the extreme climate conditions of the region, produces wines with the acidity and structure suitable for long aging. Most of Santiago Arroyo's vineyards grow on the sunny banks of the Duero River valley, at altitudes ranging from 920 m to 820 m in the lower vineyards. The diversity of soils hosting the vineyards is reflected in the aromas and flavors of the wines. Each vineyard, depending on its characteristics, is dedicated to a specific type of wine. Rosés and young wines are made from vineyards on deep soils that maintain good acidity; aged reds are crafted from vineyards on clay-limestone soils; and reservas from the most calcareous soils. The gran reserva is only produced in certain vintages.
