Mariano García – the creator of Mauro – and his children have produced another vintage of the wine that marked a turning point in Toro a few years ago: San Román. The 2020 vintage (Excellent) is a red with a markedly mineral nose with fruity hints, fresher than previous years. Concentrated and lush on the palate with firm tannins and great balance, San Román 2020 is irresistible value for money.

From an Excellent-rated year in the D.O. Toro, San Román 2020 is designed wholly from the Tinta de Toro variety. The grapes were grown on vines located in the municipalities of San Román de Hornija, Villaester and Morales de Toro, in stony and sand-clay soils. A 24-month stint in 225- and 500-litre new and used French and American oak barrels has rounded off this potent and elegant wine.
San Román Bodegas y Viñedos came into being in the late 1990s, when winemaker Mariano García, who had by then left Vega Sicilia, decided to set up a winery in the D.O. Toro underpinned by the same philosophy that had earned him success at Bodegas Mauro (V.T. Castilla y León). Mariano García brought his sons Eduardo and Alberto to San Román and turned it into one of the attractive wineries of the D.O. Toro.
San Román 2029 (D.O. Toro) is ideal with pulses with chorizo and is even incredibly good with chocolate cake.
The last turn of the century brought a significant revolution in the D.O. Toro. This historic wine region has experienced, over the last two decades, a meteoric rise to the elite of modern winemaking in the country. Among these new-generation Toros, praised by critics and awarded with the most prestigious international prizes, the wines of Bodegas y Viñedos Maurodos stand out.
Maurodos is the winery founded in 1997 by Mariano García (former winemaker of Vega Sicilia and creator of some of the best wines in the country) and his sons Eduardo and Alberto. Their first wine, San Román, debuted with the 1997 vintage and became an icon among the new-generation Toros, as well as one of the key players of the transformation. A red wine that, in addition to the characteristic strength of Toro wines, offered abundant fruit, elegance, maturity, and minerality.
San Román (aged for 22 to 25 months, depending on the vintage) synthesizes the best of Maurodos' vineyards, old Tinta de Toro vines cultivated using ecological methods. Years later, the Prima label was introduced, made from younger vines, easy to drink, fresh, and fruity. A winery committed to producing two wines that offer one of the best quality-to-price ratios on the market.
