Pruno Red Edition 2021 (an Excellent-rated year) comes from the 64-hectare vineyards surrounding the Finca Villacreces winery in Quintanilla de Onésimo (Valladolid). The vines were planted in 1980 in sandy-loam soils at an altitude of 710 metres above sea level and benefit from sharp contrasts between night and daytime temperatures during the ripening period. This red is made chiefly from Tempranillo (95%) skilfully enhanced with a touch of Cabernet Sauvignon (5%).
The grapes were picked by hand in 15-kg grates and both bunches and berries were sorted. They were destemmed without crushing. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel automatic plunger tanks, and malolactic fermentation in stainless steel tanks and oak casks. The wine was finally aged for 12 months in second- and third-year French oak barrels.
Finca Villacreces (1994) is based in the municipality of Quintanilla Onésimo (Valladolid) on the site of a former abbey on the strip of land christened the ‘golden mile’ of Ribera del Duero as it’s home to exceptional vineyards. In fact, Finca Villacreces’s vineyards are adjacent to those of Vega Sicilia. Nestled among rows of vines and a century-old pine grove is the Finca Villacreces winery, which transforms into wine the grapes from its 64 hectares of vines divided into 15 different plots and cultivated using organic farming methods.
Pruno Red Edition 2021 (D.O. Ribera del Duero) is ideal with roast guineafowl stuffed with mushrooms or roast rack of lamb.
Attractive ripe cherry-red colour with a purplish edge, intensely pigmented. Intense, complex aromas and concentrated notes recalling toasted cocoa and coffee sweets, followed by background notes of ripe red fruit (cherries and cranberries) with elegant hints of spice. Flavoursome, meaty and well-structured attack, full on the palate with tannins that are perfectly integrated, and very fruit forward (red fruits). Excellent and complex finish marked by notes of dark chocolate and balsamic hints of black liquorice.
In 2004, the Artevino group acquired Finca Villacreces, a spectacular estate with centuries of history in a privileged location, within the area known as the ‘Golden Mile’ of Ribera del Duero, with vineyards adjacent to the legendary Vega Sicilia. After the renovation of the existing winery (founded in 1994) and meticulous work on vineyard recovery, Finca Villacreces embarked on a successful journey, becoming one of the most outstanding wineries in Ribera del Duero.
Finca Villacreces boasts 64 hectares of vineyards divided into 15 different plots (based on soil, altitude, exposure, microclimate, vine training systems…), and each variety is cultivated in the site where it best adapts. The main grape is tempranillo, complemented by other French-origin varieties such as cabernet sauvignon and merlot.
Finca Villacreces is part of the Artevino group and produces the brands Pruno (the best Spanish wine under $20 according to guru Robert Parker), Finca Villacreces, and the top-tier Nebro.
