Prima 2022 is the freshest and lightest organic red wine from San Román Bodegas y Viñedos, the winery run by the García family (Mauro, Garmón Continental) in Toro. It belongs to a vintage rated Excellent, and The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker has rated it 92 points.

Prima 2022 has once again managed to bring us Toro's freshest and most approachable face without losing the identity of this historic region. This organic red, produced by San Román Bodegas y Viñedos, stems from a blend of Tinta de Toro and Garnacha, with an ageing of 12 months in French oak barrels and foudres of varying ages. The result is a lively, floral wine with very present red fruit, one of those that goes down easily but leaves a good impression.

Comes from vineyards aged between 10 and 50 years, cultivated in goblet training on sandy soils with clay in the subsoil. The 2022 harvest (the excellent vintage) was marked by drought and heat, although the cooler nights at the end helped to harvest the grapes at a good moment. That combination is evident in a direct, juicy and balanced style, with soft tannins and a sense of restrained ripeness.

The García family began working this area in the 1990s with a very specific idea: to express Toro with precision and without excess. Today, San Román Bodegas y Viñedos remains faithful to that philosophy, with a serious approach to the vineyard and a hands-on, unpretentious way of making wine. Prima 2022 fits right in: an honest wine, well made and easy to enjoy that has won over critics. In fact, The Wine Advocate by Robert Parker has rated it 92 points.

Vineyard

Description

Prima 2022 is produced from vineyards aged between 10 and 50 years, planted on sandy soils with clay in the subsoil. The vintage was marked by drought and exceptionally high temperatures, with a very dry autumn and winter, uniform budburst and a harvest that began on 29 August; this context favoured a contained and precise ripening. Made from Tinta de Toro and Garnacha, this wine expresses a fruity and floral character, with round tannins and a restrained structure that reinforces its balance and its easy enjoyment.

Age

Made from vines aged between 20 and 50 years of Tinta de Toro and Garnacha.

Climate

The 2022 vintage, rated as Excellent, was shaped by drought and exceptionally high temperatures in Toro, with a very dry autumn and winter and barely a third of the usual rainfall. After uniform budburst and flowering conditioned by the first heatwave in May, the weather remained warm and dry until mid-August, when cooler nights and some storms helped to soften maturation ahead of the harvest.

Viticulture

Prima 2022 expresses ecological viticulture that is respectful of the vineyard, designed to conserve the freshness and fruit across the range.

It comes from bush-trained vines aged between 20 and 50 years, on sandy soils with clay in the subsoil. The winery works with a low-intervention approach and restrained yields, seeking natural balance in the ripening of the grapes of Tinta de Toro and Garnacha. No use of animal-assisted farming is indicated.

Its mouthfeel is vibrant and juicy, with a pronounced fruitiness and a harmonious balance between the fruity character and the contribution from ageing, which integrates naturally and reinforces its overall impression.

The winery

San Román Bodegas y Viñedos

The last turn of the century brought a significant revolution in the D.O. Toro. This historic wine region has experienced, over the last two decades, a meteoric rise to the elite of modern winemaking in the country. Among these new-generation Toros, praised by critics and awarded with the most prestigious international prizes, the wines of Bodegas y Viñedos Maurodos stand out.

Maurodos is the winery founded in 1997 by Mariano García (former winemaker of Vega Sicilia and creator of some of the best wines in the country) and his sons Eduardo and Alberto. Their first wine, San Román, debuted with the 1997 vintage and became an icon among the new-generation Toros, as well as one of the key players of the transformation. A red wine that, in addition to the characteristic strength of Toro wines, offered abundant fruit, elegance, maturity, and minerality.

San Román (aged for 22 to 25 months, depending on the vintage) synthesizes the best of Maurodos' vineyards, old Tinta de Toro vines cultivated using ecological methods. Years later, the Prima label was introduced, made from younger vines, easy to drink, fresh, and fruity. A winery committed to producing two wines that offer one of the best quality-to-price ratios on the market.
