Bodegas Piedra is a benchmark of the D.O. Toro, and together with other great names like Numanthia or Teso La Monja, it forms the group of brands that revolutionized this denomination in the late nineties. It has the privilege of having the largest plot of old vines in Toro: Pago Bocarrage (1967), with garnachas scattered in a sea of tinta de Toro vines. With these garnachas over 50 years old, it produces Piedra Prohibida 2022 (92 points Decanter). A free and rebellious wine, outside the D.O. seal, organic and aged for 4 months in French oak. A magnificent representative of the new trend that bets on the garnacha grape in the Zamora region.

General Information

Piedra Prohibida 2022 is an organic red wine made from 100% garnacha. The grapes come from the largest plot of old vines in Toro: Pago Bocarrage; a 40-hectare plot planted in 1967, where the garnachas are scattered among a sea of tinta de Toro vines, as was traditionally done in the past.

These are vines over 50 years old, hand-harvested in 20 kg boxes during the second half of September. Upon arrival at the winery, they went through a selection table with strict quality control. Fermentation was carried out in stainless steel at 25º C, and malolactic fermentation in French oak barrels. Finally, it underwent a light aging of 4 months in second-year French oak barrels, and an additional 6 months of refinement in the bottle before being released to the market ready to enjoy.

Seduced by the potential of the D.O. Toro, Scottish lawyer Grant Stein and his wife, Anne, founded Bodegas Piedra (Estancia Piedra) in the past decade of the nineties. To launch this project, they chose one of the best plots in the area. Their Pago Bocarrage hosts the largest old vineyard property of the D.O. Toro: 40 hectares of vines planted—almost all—in 1967 on clay, sand, and limestone soils, in the valley formed by the Duero and Guareña rivers.

The production facilities are located a few meters from the vineyard, where the most modern winemaking techniques are applied to achieve wines that have earned the applause of the sector. Wines that highlight the varietal character of the traditional varieties of Toro. The winery also offers a wide range of activities for wine tourists.

Piedra Prohibida 2022 (D.O. Toro) is an ideal red to accompany dishes such as beans with partridge or duck breast.

Tasting notes

It presents a cherry red color with a ruby rim; well-covered. On the nose, it is intense, highlighting floral aromas (violet) along with hints of red and black fruit (plum, cherry), which give way to caramel notes. On the palate, it is aromatic, flavorful, enjoying good balance and a smooth flow. The finish is of good persistence.

Creators' opinion

Searching for garnacha grapes in a sea of red vines, like someone searching for treasure, which we have finally found. This garnacha wine comes from an old bush vineyard over 50 years old, where scattered vines of this variety appear, as was the tradition in ancient times. Dressed in ruby, it offers subtle and complex aromas, accompanied by an elegant palate, balanced, fresh, and fragrant.
